Re: Statues INSIDE the Crystal Palace.

Post by ConservatorKate »

Hello

I am training to be a museum conservator and am treating a plate with a print of a state from the Great Exhibition with the caption "Massacre of the Innocents"

The print is identical to the one on this jug in National Museums Scotland
http://nms.scran.ac.uk/database/record. ... chdb=scran

Could you help me find a picture of this statue at the Crystal Palace - there is a title on this page, but no pic! Or any references you have would also be very appreciated

Many thanks

To Clarify ;

The Great Exhibiton of 1851in Hyde Park was planned years before the building it was to held in had been designed.

When Joseph Paxton's glass and iron design was accepted in 1850, it was instantly nick-named "The Crystal Palace."

This name continued, when the Crystal Palace Company was formed in 1852, to permanently re-erect the building at SYDENHAM, where it stood from 1854 till 1936, when it burned to the ground.

The thread above, covers the collection of plaster casts of contemporary sculture, bought by the Crystal Palace Company and displayed at SYDENHAM from 1854 - 1936.

The image you have linked to shows a crouching female figure with '1851 EXHIBITION' underneath. This is a souvenir of the Great Exhibition of 1851, and shows an example of the sculpture which was submitted to the exhibition committee by sculptors and manufacturers, and to be sold or returned at the end of that year.

I havn't made an exhaustive study of the sculpture at the Great Exhibition as it is very well recorded, and suggest you consult "The Illustrated Exhibitor" for example. Here is a link I've just found, and shows an example of the French sculpture.

http://www.bl.uk/learning/images/victor ... 02696.html

I have added images of the two sculptures at SYDENHAM with the same title, but one is a standing female figure by James Legrew, and the other has a standing male figure as well as a crouching female one. Neither the one you are looking for . . . . .

Massacre of the Innocents by James Legrew at the Crystal Palace SYDENHAM, standing directly under the "LAM" of Lambeth.

Image

Massacre of the Innocents by George Gamon Adams - on the left, at the Crystal Palace SYDENHAM.

Image

. . . . and again at the International Exhibition 1862, South Kensington.

Hope this helps.

Hi

Can anybody tell me whether the sculpture on this site (within Crystal Palace 1851) is a lift from a publication or is a compendium of material gathered together and if so by whom?

Thanks

Ahem,

The text in quote boxes, is from the Handbook to the Courts of Modern Sculpture by Anna Brownell Jameson, issued for the opening of the Crystal Palace at SYDENHAM in 1854. As it says at the top of this thread. NOT the Great Exhibition at Hyde Park of 1851.

This handbook is completely UNILLUSTRATED. I have transcribed the text, which is displayed in quote boxes. Any corrections or additions to the collections made later and listed in guides later than 1854 are NOT in quote boxes.

The illustrations and additions have been added as part of MY research. I have attributed sources of illustrations whenever I have remembered them, BUT THEY ARE RARELY MY COPYRIGHT.

THIS IS NOT A GUIDE TO THE SCULPTURE THAT WAS EXHIBITED AT THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF 1851.

IT IS OF THE SCULPTURE EXHIBITED AT CRYSTAL PALACE AT SYDENHAM FROM 1854 TO 1936 WHEN THE BUILDING WAS BURNT DOWN

Hello,

I work on the Crystal Palace for my master degree dissertation and on the modern sculptures inside the palace.

I wonder where you found the last album of photographs with the statues taken one by one. Do you know when they were taken?

Thank you in advance for the answer.

The album was for sale on ebay UK and went unsold. The seller never replied to me.

Most photography was taken by - or at least published by Negretti & Zambra in the early years of the Crystal Palace. Even till the 1890's there were notices that no photography by anyone else was permitted at the site.

Good Luck with your dissertation - would love to read it when it is finished.

I should be grateful for any information about the source of the top image under #83 Barre Bacchante - a daguerreotype showing the sculpture displayed in a row with three other works, the one in the foreground being Pradier's Atlanta tying her sandal. I should like to publish the image and want to credit the source
