Does someone know details of what's happening with the derelict area in the corner of Mayow Park? It's being turned into a nursery but are there plans to do up The Lodge house and toilets as well?
I've trawled through the archives but can't find much discussion of Mayow Park. Because it doesn't have a park keeper it's quite hard to find information about it and there's nothing on the web, apart from the history on the Sydenham Society site.
I wondered how people got involved in the park. I know there's a Friends of Mayow Park group but how do you join? I've looked at the Lewisham website here but it just asks you to get in touch with Glendale, a huge company who run parks across the UK.
If you get in touch with glendale they will tell you when the next friends of mayow park meeting will be,they run all of lewishams parks and they told me about the wells park firiends meetings.
I'll get on to them, leaf, but it'd be great if someone could post information here too.
What got me thinking was the money that's been pumped into Dulwich Park. Being in such an affluent area, that park's Friends probably have quite a lot of time on their hands, business experience and powerful support. They raised hundreds of thousands for playground equpment and other facilities. Rather perversely, this meant they were in a stronger position to secure their £4m lottery grant. It can't have hurt to have the Culture Minister in charge of the fund as your local MP, either.
I just wondered whether anyone round here was trying to raise cash for Mayow Park, which certainly needs it a lot more than Dulwich did. There was a rumour people wanted to do up the fountain, for instance.
Mayow Park was set up as a recreation ground but there are no facilities for sports teams or even public toilets. Has anyone, anywhere, got any plans? The only activity seems to be chopping up the latest tree to blow down.
Envirowork Lewisham is working on clearing up the derelict area of Mayow Park.
The intention is to develop the area into a tree and plant nursery - thus restoring the area to its former use. It will be managed by Envirowork, and will be staffed by trainees on 6 month contracts and employed under Envirowork's subsidised scheme in partnership with Jobcentre Plus. Envirowork will develop a training scheme with the Institute of Groundsmanship to provide a fully accredited City and Guilds Apprenticeship Certificate.
The nursery will be run as a social enterprise and in its second year expects to sell plants and trees to the trade.
The next meeting of Friends of Mayow Park is on May 9 and information about how to get involved can be obtained from Glendale on 8318 3986.
Friends of Mayow Park hope to be doing a bird walk sometime within the the next few weeks (probably on Saturday March 17- but this date is still to be confirmed) - look out for the notices which will be put up around the park. Be on parade at 7.30 and bring your binoculars!
Cheers, Pat. I like the idea of the bird walk but its impossible with my children. They love to shout hello at wildlife too much!
We heard from a neighbour that many of the Friends aren't particlualrly au fait with the internet, which I can understand, but it's a shame as this forum is such a good way to promote interest.
