Re: drink store kirkdale
There are quite a few places that sell wine. It didn't look like it had a good selection, it looked like a shabby, see it on every high street unloved 'offie' to get some cheap plonk and 20/20.
It woud be far better to have something different, that we don't already have an abundance of unless it is really really really good and looks really really really good so it's an asset to itself and the high street.

Re: drink store kirkdale
Far too many alcohol outlets all round.
Think we should return to the system of Licensed off licence's and Pubs.
I remember Olde Man West of corner of Newlands Park and The High Street.
Sunday 12 to 2pm , evenings 7pm to 10.30 pm.
Those were the days.

Agree with you there Lee. It annoys us there are no decent off licenses that sell good wine and beer in Sydenham. Would love to see a version of Boss Man Wines on Lordship Lane open in Sydenham.

Re: drink store kirkdale
I agree with you again Eagle.
I worked with Threshers in the past. They knew back then that an off licence on it's own couldn't survive. They made more money out of fags than wine. Off licences have had their day, unless they specialize and offer really good advice from people who know their stuff about wines etc and sell things you can't get in a supermarket.
So bacically Oddbins (still going strong), not Threashers (went bust).

I walked past this place every day and never noticed it was there.
Probably says something...

Oddbins actually went into administration in April 2011 and closed many of their stores. The new owners do seem to be doing okay though and hopefully they will continue to do so. They did have a lucky escape though.leenewham wrote:

Re: drink store kirkdale
So that is where the infamous 24/7 drinkers and spongers get their alcohol.
Ironic alcohol an Arabic word when they do not oe should not drink it. Or maybe not.

I hope you were not one of those who were critical of tax dodging by large companies.
This is equally bad. Depriving the health service etc and feathering the nest of foreign supermarkets , thereby hurting British workers.

Pro European. So am I.
But when Amazon or Starbucks pay Corporation Tax in Luxembourg on income earned in the UK this is destroying as much loved public services.
So is going to a foreign country to buy goods , depriving our United Kingdom of the revenue.

I do not purchase any alcohol at present due to medical reasons. However ,have been and real ale and occasional wine drinker.
Britain has the best real ale.
For wine tend to support friendly countries such as Australia , USA and NZ. Although some time before I purchased any.
I am NOT complaining about you buying foreign products in UK outlets that pay legitimate tax. We are either talking cross purposes or more likely you appreciate you have been found out and trying to twist argument.

Re: drink store kirkdale
The founders of drinkstore in 1996 I hear ran the store very well with a great selection of wine and spirits only untill someone else took over and ran the store as a usual off license you see every where hence why it closed, but the drink store is one of the first and oldest off licenses in sydenham

You have again avoided what is difference between you and Starbucks????? Re Tax of course????
I would imagine you may a better Latte.
Of course we are European because we in the the Continent of Europe. Although strictly speaking geology wise we are Eurasia as Europe and Asia one continent.
I like to be friends with people worldwide , not just those in Europe. But still pay my taxes in UK to support out services.

Still do not totally understand your logic. However as one who does not go to France ( except through tunnel to greener pastures of Belgium and Germany ). Last 7 years have only holidayed in UK supporting British goods.
When shopping try to buy British ,but if not possible buy from friendly countries. For instance saw Blueberries from Chile and Argentina. Easy choice to make.
With cheese always buy British with sole exception of Parmesan. We have lovely cheeses.
Must admit French products normally come well down the line in products to buy

Again you seem to misunderstand what I have written.
I said where possible I eat British produce.
Cheeses have been great all year. Specialist British Cheeses from Waitrose have been great.
This time of year I do venture to eat products from other peoples of the world but choose very carefully from where I purchase.
Anyway we are probably boring other posters so guess better return to the excess of alcohol outlets in Sydenham.
