Rubbish collection
Rubbish collection
I guess I'm not the only one with a fast filling bin wondering when it is going to be emptied this week. Normal collection day for Sydenham is Tuesday which is a bank holiday and they have the backlog of the Boxing Day.
Helpfully the Lewisham website advises that Tuesday collection will be Wednesday or Thursday this week and Tuesday or Wednesday next week: http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/myservices/w ... stmas.aspx
Finally I have to say over the years I've found the council collection service excellent. If only everything else approached that standard. And, I guess they are having to work that much harder in a holiday week to make up the lost days.

ummmmm ..................thats because it was one of Steve (who eat all the pies) Bullock's pledges to the SS and others before he became Mayor.
I give credit where credit is due!

Who do you mean by SS. I kow the initials as being either Hr Himmler's crowd or postcode for Southend on Sea.

If it's the first one you mention Eagle, then no wonder they wouldn't want to upsetEagle wrote:Who do you mean by SS. I kow the initials as being either Hr Himmler's crowd or postcode for Southend on Sea.

Sydenham Society?
Agree that the rubbish collection, especially over holiday periods, is excellent.

Re: Rubbish collection
Lewisham's rubbish collection is indeed excellent - but I'm not sure how much that has to do with any Mayoral pledges to anyone. And, Okepinay, do tell what it is with you, Steve Bullock and pies.
Re: Rubbish collection
The collection here is usually Tuesday also and a very good service. I don't know what will happen this year although the Council workers have kept to schedule in the past even on Bank Holidays surprisingly since they ought to be able to have a day off too with their friends and family given rubbish can wait a day.
Whatever they do, I happily wish them a Happy Christmas & New Year and a thanks to them for doing a job that's physically hard work and not the most pleasant plus working in all weathers.
Perhaps the Council is giving worst scenario dates on their site? Not long to find out

I said to my other half that I bet Eagle replies to this, alarm bells obviously rang when SS was mentioned as some of his views make him sound like a Neo Nazi !

Re: Rubbish collection
On a related note, does anyone know whether the council collects Christmas trees for recycling? We lived in Lambeth last year, where the council came and collected unwanted trees over a period after new year, but looking at the Lewisham website there only seem to be recycling centres dotted around the borough. We don't have a car (our tree was delivered by the lovely people selling them in Sydenham Road), so I'm a bit "stumped" (sorry) as to what to do with it.

Re: Rubbish collection
Thanks...no door-to-door collection, then?
Re: Rubbish collection
Are none of the recycling points near enough to walk to? Christmas trees are surprisingly light and easy to carry.

Re: Rubbish collection
The Christmas tree collection points in Sydenham are in the two parks - Sydenham Wells Park using the entrance in Wells Park Road and Mayow Park using the entrance in Mayow Road. Residents can take their real unwanted trees to the collection points until 27 January - the trees are pulped and added to the compost pile.
Green waste can also be taken to the Civic Amenities Site in Landmann Way SE14 5RS - the weekend green waste collection will start again in the Spring in Girton Road car park.

Re: Rubbish collection
@ Chris Best: So if one (on foot) is not able to carry or drag a tree to one of those two parks, what is the alternative? Will the refuse collectors take them?

About a 20 minute walk, but it's quite a big tree! My own fault - I just assumed, without checking, that I'd be able to have it collected for recycling. Perhaps Lewisham will introduce this service in the future, if they don't do it now.

Re: Rubbish collection
If it's any consolation, I'll be dragging an eight foot tree down the road in a few days time.
Seems like a good way to start the New Year exercise regime.

Re: Rubbish collection
are there any plans for lewisham to start proper green waste collection? from our houses or nearby, that doesn't involve driving?
Re: Rubbish collection
I'd like to know that too.hazy wrote:are there any plans for lewisham to start proper green waste collection? from our houses or nearby, that doesn't involve driving?
There is green-waste collection at the moment, but you have to pay for it.

Re: Rubbish collection
If you are unable to get your Christmas tree to the park then you can chop it up and put it in a green waste bag and ring for a collection - here is the link http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/myservices/w ... rvice.aspx - Sydenham has a collection on Wednesdays and the bags cost a £1 each - £10 for a roll of ten and this covers the cost of the transportation.
We carried out a pilot brown wheelie bin kerbside service a few years ago and concluded it was more cost effective to offer satellite sites where residents can bring their green waste from March to November. We have no plans to offer a free kerbside green waste service.

Re: Rubbish collection
The green bag scheme is one of my least favourite aspects of rubbish collection in Lewisham. To get the bags you have to call and order them or go to your local library. On more than one occasion I've made a special trip to the library to find they had run out of the bags. You have to buy a roll of ten, so the minimum outlay is £10. What if you just have a Chrismas tree to dispose of and no garden? Are the bags biodegradable or do they go to landfill? How are the bags transported to depots and then to the libraries and residents? And finally, chopping up a Christmas tree is all very well if you have the right tools, but I am sure many residents do not. I really don't think that is very helpful advice.Chris Best wrote:If you are unable to get your Christmas tree to the park then you can chop it up and put it in a green waste bag and ring for a collection - here is the link http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/myservices/w ... rvice.aspx - Sydenham has a collection on Wednesdays and the bags cost a £1 each - £10 for a roll of ten and this covers the cost of the transportation.

I regularly use my local satellite site when it's open, but I have to drive there. Not very environmentally friendly. And alarming when I find an errant snail crawling along my dashboard a few days later.
How come other local authorities can operate brwn bin schemes but not Lewisham? Things may have changed a lot since you last trialled kerbside collections. Other authorities collect food waste along with green waste for composting.
