Safety (and how to help the police catch a villain) tips

Post by marymck »

Following on from JulietP's great tip on another thread: if you're mugged try to remember the perp's shoes, as they're something they can't hide; I thought I'd start a thread where people can post other useful tips.

Here's mine. It was taught me by Hampshire Police, with whom I worked a few years back. When parking, always park for a quick getaway. In other words, reverse into parking bays so you can drive straight out.

Oh and this one learnt from bitter (and damp) experience ...

When visiting certain homes, never sit on the soft furnishings.

if you do get physically attacked - do as much as possible to retaliate, in self defence, in such a way that leaves evidence - ie rip clothes, or bite fingers, er ears, or something that someone else later will think looks odd, and query what happened. If you injure your attacker, in self defence, they may end up at a doctors, pharmacy, or even A&E, where the circumstances of the injury may be enquired about, and police involvement may be instigated.

another tip, buy a UV marker pen, and keep it in your bag - when asked to empty bag, or handover purse, or whatever, take out the pen, and daub as much as possible on any available part of assailant. Inform police of UV markings on perpetrator.

oh yes, and don't forget to scream incredibly loudly at all times whilst being attacked.

I wouldn't recommend biting attackers! You'd have no idea if they were positive for Hep C or HIV.
