Does anyone know the names of any childrens homes that were in the area of Sydenham.
My mother and her sister were placed in one in 1933 when their mother died ,they stayed there till 1940, their brother was sent to Perry Hill boys school.
Or maybe someone could help me out as to where i can find out where these schools were.
Thank you Margaret
Margaret, the most likely would be the Salvation Army home at 6 Sydenham Hill. It was there from before 1911 until at least the early 1970s and was demolished some years ago. It was known variously as the Salvation Army Industrial Home, Salvation Army Approved Home for Young Girls and Salvation Army St Margaret's Home for Girls.
I'm not sure about the Perry Hill home. There was certainly a boys' home in Perry Rise, called Shaftesbury House. That was needlessly demolished four or five years ago.
Steve, very many thanks for your help would you know where i may be able to obtain any records , would i be best to write to the main office of The Salvation Army, would there have been any Dr Banardos homes in and around Sydenham this was another home that was mentioned as well, the boys home was the one you said now thinking back to when i spoke with my Uncle who was there.
Sorry so many question you have been of great help to me. Many thanks Margaret
It might also be worth contacting Lewisham Local Studies at http://tinyurl.com/aex8q as they might also have some information. I'm not aware of any Barnado's homes in Sydenham so the home Pat mentions would seem to be the nearest.
