Crystal Palace Stereoview Sale #5

Post by tulse hill terry »

Yet another thread on the subject, thanks to the guys at http://www.worldofstereoviews.com

The whole point of these double views is that when seen through a stereoviewer . . .

Image

. . . . one would be able to see a three-dimensional image. It's incredible when looking at these views of such a long, light-filled building, just how some of them seem to go on and on forever. Bit like me perhaps?

Negretti and Zambra view with attached label titled ‘Crystal Palace Sculpture Gallery. 223. The Mourners. By G. Lough’

This was actually cast 46, by John Graham Lough http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Graham_Lough

It was originally created for a competition in 1844 to provide sculpture for the New Houses of Parliament, exhibited again in the 1851 Great Exhibition, the only other copy [also in plaster] after being displayed for some time at Elswick Hall, was destroyed by the local council in the 30's.http://www.timarchive2.freeuk.com/html/body_elswick.htm

A Bronze version was made for Charles Siemens, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Wilhelm_Siemens, wonder where it is now?

Negretti and Zambra view titled on an attached label with insect motif corners ‘Stereoscopic Illustrations of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham. The Great Orchestra’

This EXTREMELY unusual view must have been taken between 1857 and 1862.

"Extensive handwritten notes which, because I care, I will make the effort to reproduce. They state: ‘Even tho’ a special stair shows leading up to the Telescope Gallery, it is not the Nave – it is the Main Transept with 5.5 arches between it and the two X-bracing bays on its end elevation. See 1850/60 floor plan. The top word on the two signs says “Inkerman”. Not noted in the 1854 handbook; must have been installed later – most probably the west end of Main Transept’." Re: Crystal Palace Stereoview Sale #5

Post by aroundmidnight »

Hello everyone,
I am trying to reach the lucky private collector/library/museum who may have in its collection the following stereoview.
It is fascinating and I wish I could add a hi-res digitization of this view to a picture selection of stereoviews about Crystal Palace…
Any contact or clue would be much appreciated!
You can answer here or by private message...

All the best!

publisher: Negretti & Zambra (London)
title: "Telescope Gallery" or «Bull’s Eye Gallery » North end of nave, Crystal Palace, Sydenham
a print can be seen at the Musée d’Orsay Collections (half of a stereoview)
https://www.musee-orsay.fr/fr/collectio ... umid=34880

It is not the stereoview published by The London Stereoscopic Company (same gallery, but without chair)!
