Dulwich Wood House
Dulwich Wood House
I popped into the Dulwich Wood House pub over the weekend and found out that they will be closing for refurbishment - their last night in their current state will be this Saturday, and they intend to re-open in late October - the main thrust of their proposals will be to focus much more on the restaurant side of their business. So, sounds like bad news if you're a CAMRA member, but good news if (like most forum posters, it would seem) you want to see greater restaurant facilities in the area.

The DW had a problem being stuck between a pub and gastro pub.
I used to like the food and the drink but in last year have gone of the Youngs ( Wells ) so will not visit just for the food.
When I was however you were paying good prices but especially in hot weather a constant steam of tatoo'd lager drinkers with kids coming through to get drinks. One had to give , I see they are decided to go for the upmarket restuarant buisness rather than lager , and fags.
If Youngs improves may give them a go again when finished.

I hope it will still welcome drinkers ( as long as beer improves ) but I guess with the refurbishment the beer will go up even more , probably well over GBP 3.50 a pint
Even JDW have increased guest beers to GBP 2.10. I am happy with that if good quality.
I know they have crap house beers such as John Smiths cheaper but that is only for the drink anything all day market

Who on earth charges £3.50a pint?!?Eagle wrote:I hope it will still welcome drinkers ( as long as beer improves ) but I guess with the refurbishment the beer will go up even more , probably well over GBP 3.50 a pint

IMHO the reasonable cut-off for a pint of beer now sits at £3, it should be in the £2.50-75 area really.... only 18 months ago I would have walked out of anywhere that charged over £2.50, but the raw materials and tax have increased in price rather a lot in that time...
You need to go to different pubs! Broadside 'should' be about £2.70... prices that high are inexcusable.Eagle wrote:I have paid over GBP 3.00 a pint locally at least two pubs. Broadside is usually over that figure.
I know this is horrendous but I fully expect if the Pub reopens as a gastro pub then price will not be far short of GBP 3.50
I still recall a good pint at 1/8pence.
A good little protest is if prices aren't clearly displayed is to order a pint and when faced with an absurd price refuse to pay it and offer to only pay what you think it is worth; reminding the barman/maid of their responsibilities under the price marking order 2004.....and then walk out.
sam Smith's pubs are always a god bet - if you like their beer that is...Eagle wrote:Thanks for that tip.
I think I paid 3.00 at Honor Oak Pub a year ago and sure I did at Dartmouth Arms , Dolphin nearly there.
I can't understand how other pubs can justify their high prices when pubs such as sam smiths - that have lots of prime locations up in town - can charge below £2 a pint. Surely they have to pay their staff, pay business rates, beer duty, utility bills and so on too?
Indeed. We're big fans of Sam Smiths pubs. Good, old fashioned places with cheap drinkable beer. Their policy against music is quite appreciated as well, especially when held up to places that you have to shout to make yourself heard. Most weekends will find us in one of their pubs on or around Brewer Street. Any place where you can get a round for a group of 6 for a tenner is fine by me.
The Princess Louise, in Holborn, whilst not everyones cuppa, has the most magnificent pint of Sam Smiths - at least every time I've been in there it has been.
I agree with Bensonby though, about the price of beer locally - it's ridiculous in some places.
I also appreciate that Bensonby knows his stuff - I've stumbled across some of his contributions to beerintheevening.com; an invaluable tool for locating some of the more interesting boozers all over the country

Why thank you, the first time someone has actually cross-referenced my posts from different sitesfishcox wrote:The Princess Louise, in Holborn, whilst not everyones cuppa, has the most magnificent pint of Sam Smiths - at least every time I've been in there it has been.

Do you know the Cittie of York just up the road? Another interesting looking pub.
Yeah, I'll remember that when I'm picking my teeth up off the floor and removing fragments of glass from my face.bensonby wrote:[

not that I am aware of. I must admit I've never been to the one in Anerley. Does anyone have any recent experience of the place?Eagle wrote:Thanks for the tip about Samuel Smiths
The only Sam Smiths remotely locally , I believe , is the pub next to Anerley Station. About 15 years ago or so used to be nice pub no idea what it is like now but not really a local .
Are there any nearer.??
Nay, the one in Anerley is the nearest for us in Sydenham. I haven't been yet, but I'm told that's it's a bit rough - that's secondhand information from a stranger though, so take from it what you will.
Cittie of Yorke is very nice, one of the best SS that I've been to. Apparently the cellar is quite good as well, though I haven't been down there yet.

Hi Bensonby, yes I do know the Cittie of York - I used to frequent it often on a Friday night, when I worked in The City.
I've found that Sam Smiths is consistently decent quality in any of their pubs around London - even Chandos near St Martins.
Being from Manchester, its nice to be able to get a decent pint of hand pulled beer, but it does need looking after, and a regular turnover to keep it decent.
I tend to drink a decent lager if I'm outside of the centre of London - I had a pint of Pride in The Woodman, and it made me terribly ill. I also find Youngs a bit 'hit and miss' - it rarely has a decent head on it.
Often just tightening the sparkler on the pump will improve it, but then it makes it more difficult to pull a pint.
The pint I had with Admin a while back in The Bridge Tavern was good too - I forget what it was.
As this thread has digressed from its original topic, I think I'll start a new one, for people who like 'proper' English beer.
