NEWSLETTER OF THE FRIENDS OF CATOR PARK AND ALEXANDRA RECREATION GROUND

Issue 1, June 2008

friends.cator-and-alexandra@live.co.uk

The recently-formed Friends of Cator Park and Alexandra Recreation Ground is a group of local residents who, in liaison with Bromley Council and English Landscapes, seek to improve both parks as recreational areas.

The Friends – open to everyone - include volunteers who offer their passion, skills and knowledge to improve both parks for the benefit of all.
Tea in Cator Park Sunday 22nd June 2008 from 2.00-4.00 pm

Join us in celebrating the tradition of afternoon tea by bringing
your own picnic, and join in the fun of your local park, weather
permitting of course.

Love Parks Week is an annual awareness- raising campaign to promote and celebrate the use of our parks and green spaces. Parks and open spaces are a precious resource to the community, helping to improve our health, quality of life and mental well-being.

At Cator, stalls and fun things include:

• face-painting
• name the puppy
• plant and book stalls
• portrait sketching
• painting competition (please bring your entries with a park theme)
• raffle

Thank you (woof, bark!)

The Friends would like to thank everyone who we met on our recent free Poo-Bag days! You may have seen us out and about on the weekends of April 26/27 and May 3/4 in our orange jackets as we participated in a council scheme to raise awareness of the need for dog-walkers to pick up dog mess. Thank you for your support and keep up the good work! It all helps make the parks dog-mess free and safe health-wise, especially for
children.

Possible future events

For example, in the autumn we will be assembling volunteers to help in a massive bulb planting venture in both parks e.g. daffodils, bluebells, and crocuses. You may like to help.

Watch this space:

Music in the Park: Alexandra Recreation Ground, late summer

Bulb Planting Initiative: Cator Park and Alexandra Recreation Ground, autumn

Cator and Alexandra

Cator Park is named after John Cator, a wealthy nineteenth century landowner, and was part of the Cator Estate which covered much of Penge and Beckenham. Cator Park was originally known as Kent House Pleasure Gardens. It was not open to the public but to certain local residents who had possession of a special key to gain access to the grounds.

Alexandra Recreation Ground is named after Princess Alexandra and encompasses the site of the old Penge Cricket Ground. It had a band stand on which were held music concerts on Sundays throughout the summer. Much pomp and circumstance attended the opening of Alexandra Recreation Ground in 1891 and Cator Park in 1932.

We will tell you more in each Newsletter.

Mission statement

To maintain and enhance both Cator Park and Alexandra Recreation Ground as places of recreation, safety and healing
• by consulting and working in partnership with the local stakeholders;
• by encouraging environmental sustainability;
• by liaising with the Council in its responsibility regarding the maintenance of both park areas.
