Bell green transport meeting Saturday 30th September

Post by JRW »

On Saturday 30th September, the Bell Green Neighbourhood Forum is holding a meeting at the Livesey Memorial Hall 11am to 1pm. We want to hear your experiences as a pedestrian, cyclist or a public transport user at Bell Green.

We are currently in discussions with TfL, Southeastern and Network Rail about these issues, and our transport engineer Deone is taking their representatives for a tour of the worst issues later on Saturday. Come and tell us what messages you want us to pass on to them.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people who have accessibility issues using Lower Sydenham Station, or crossing the road.

The whole thing was so misconceived, it is amazing they got away with it.
It is an out of town retail park right in the middle of one of the most densely populated areas in London, yet makes no concessions to the fact that many visitors will be pedestrians. And obviously makes no concessions to cyclists, despite the fact one of the main entry points to the waterlink way is at the end of the now treacherous spine rd.

Our designers and planners surely can remember back to design school and the modules on accessibility. and yet they came up with this and I can only think they were put under severe restraints
My conclusion is the park was deliberately made as pedestrian unfriendly as possible to help resolve the tension between the then new development and the traders on sydenham road.

The planners, if prodded further might decide to ban these pesky pedestrians altogether from the estate, and make it a high traffic neighbourhood. Sunak would likely be more than happy to endorse such a measure, and come down to open it himself.

A major contribution would be to re-align the railway to a lower level (very much pooissble and feasible) and construct a road bridge over it. (dual carriageway).

Conflicts between pedestrians and vehicular traffic are better served by speeding the flow of traffic and separating the two where possible. At Bell Green this is very possible. All it takes is a simple flyover to take traffice exiting Sainsbury over the traffic from and to Southend Lane. A similar arrangement at the other exit would likewise make for safer crossings. Re-locating Lower Sydenham Station so that it is adjacent to Southend Lane would be another improvement.

Will they do any of this?

Not a hope in hell.

Goodness. Sixties visions live. Where does the River Pool and its flood plain fit into your concept?
