Sydenham features in The Metro

Post by LocalResident »

Locals regard Sydenham with a great deal of affection and it’s not hard to understand why. It has an abundance of open spaces, decent schools, interesting shops, cafés and pubs — and above all is one of the most welcoming and community-minded places to live south of the river. A prime example of this is that, thanks to the efforts of the Sydenham Society, the 300-year old Greyhound pub has been rebuilt and is due to reopen soon. Getting around is no problem as there are three stations, including one on the Overground network.

Running down Sydenham is also part of our grand tradition. An article in today's Grauniad made me feel a little happier living in this tatty town rather than the lush green of proper surburbia (aka Bromley). That is the higher the density of housing the happier and healthier we may be. Its sort of counter-intuitive until you read the thinking behind it: https://www.theguardian.com/society/201 ... tudy-finds

But did that article really show that higher density=better?

Mightn't it be inner city (with facilities, life, culture, history, an architectural mix, etc etc) beats urban fringe (empty of anything but housing) despite pleasanter, lower densities?

Of course with modern planning policies you could end up with the worst of both ends - dense new settlements with minimal public arenas.

Not to suggest any particular place for Sydenham along that line....

Honestly.....two posts to this very positive review of Sydenham! Yet 6 pages running it down because someone at Cafe Nero deemed it "too tatty for one of their establishment! Their loss. :(
