NEW PLAY EQUIPMENT AT MAYOW PARK - APPALLING!!

Post by Maebee »

New play equipment has been installed at Mayow Park recently - I think over the weekend. Instead of putting it within the playground area, it has been placed in the picnic area beside the playground on the grass. I went there tonight with my children and it is just one big huge mud bath. It is completely unusable and also a bit dangerous as a wooden platform/walkway has also been installed and that is covered with slippery mud.

Whoever had the bright idea of sticking the equipment there must be completely stupid. There is plenty of room to put it inside the playground where the other equipment is and where most of the children play. Now as a mother you will have to watch your kids in two seperate areas. Also, with the weather the way it is, there is no point putting the equipment on the grass as it is just too muddy and then the equipment is completely unusable.

While I am very happy that some new equipment has been bought for Mayow Park the whole exercise has been completely pointless.

I suggest that we all call Glendale or the Council and make a complaint about this. Mayow Park is an extremely popular and well used park for lots of children so why not put some thought into their play areas.

What utter bastards. I say let's ask Glendale who installed this playground equipment over the weekend and let's string them up.

I have just spoken to Hilary Jarrett who is chair of Friends of Mayow Park. She is just going round to the park to take a look.

The various "friends" groups which are linked to every park in the borough are locals who voluntarily give up their time to act as a liaison with Glendale the company LBL has appointed to look after our parks. Hilary is extremely critical of the way the park is maintained and looking at the current state of Mayow Park it's hard to disagree with her.

Some people blame incompetence by Glendale for the state of many of our local parks; others, the budgetary restraints imposed by Lewisham council which Glendale work under. Take your pick. What is certain is that Lewisham's often shoddy green spaces stand in sharp contrast to the beautifully maintained parks of neighbouring Bromley.

Well I think that Wells Park is well maintained and looks lovely. Not been to Mayow Park for a while so I can't comment on what that looks like but why should one be so much better than the other?

The "friends" groups do sound like a good idea - would it be possible for someone to provide any more information on them on the STF?

Glendale placed the new play equipment on the grass at the request of the Mayow under five playgroup. They believe that they were merely responding to the wishes of park users.

Yes, Wells Park is so much better because the resources which should have been spent on other local parks have been spent to achieve a Green Flag Park status for Wells Park. Bromley, have dropped the Green Flag scheme for this very reason.

Mayow Park

Sorry to sound like a shrub fanatic (I always seem to be harping on about them) but I was in Mayow park and noticed there are not many shrubs at all. Just lots of trees. More areas with evergreen shrubs (or grasses etc) would make the park look less bleak in winter. Some wonderful displays could be created...

Poppy - why not get involved with the Friends of Mayow Park group if you want to improve the park?
