Good old Gurkhas
Forgot how great the food is there. Took a couple of mates there last week and they're both curry fiends - both extremely impressed with the food there. I've not been there for a while (even though it's my local). But it was a great evening (it followed a few pints in the Dolphin) ... come on Sydneham get the Greyhound sorted out with a nice new bar up that end of the high street and it'll create more late night business for other restaurants. I don't want to have to keep going to E Dulwich or C Palace.
Sydenham could do it.

I'd welcome a good thai restaurant in sydenham!
Re: Good old Gurkhas
Agree, Gurkhas when through a rough patch but usually pretty good these days . I think the staff are pretty good at their job which makes a big difference.
I usually have their " staff curry " and it's very nice indeed .
A very good evening

Re: Good old Gurkhas
The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, nicely furnished and welcoming staff.
The food is great! quite reasonably priced, and really tasty.
I did find their soft drinks were a little overpriced, but apart from that, everything was good.
I'm considering getting a takeaway from there one evening.
....maybe this evening, as I suddenly feel hungry

I have to say the Barakah is the best for a takeaway - if it had in-dining then it would be the best for that too!...Gurkhas is great for in-dining however.GemStone wrote:The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, nicely furnished and welcoming staff.

Re: Good old Gurkhas
I have yet to try Gurkhas. However the Lemon Tree is fantastic and the coconut chutney is amazing!
Re: Good old Gurkhas
I have had very good meals at both Gurkas and Lemon Tree but wondered if anyone has tried Anokha the new indian restaurant (sit down and takeaway) on the corner of sydenham road and champion road?
Any feedback appreciated.

Had my first experience of Gurkhas last night. Great food and fantastic value. Slightly long wait between starters and mains especially as we had a one year old (nearly) with us. She liked the chicken tikka

Just on the edge of Sydenham but in Penge, you'll find Himalayan Kitchen, which is run by the former head chef at Gurkhas. It's takeaway only but superb.
Re: Good old Gurkhas
Himalayan Kitchen is excellent and it's NOT just takeaway only. They're not licensed so just take your own drink in, they have several tables one can dine at.Bovine Juice wrote:Just on the edge of Sydenham but in Penge, you'll find Himalayan Kitchen, which is run by the former head chef at Gurkhas. Re: Good old Gurkhas
I haven't been as it's always been totally packed, but why is the Sparrowhawk a 'Nobs Paradise'?

Beacsue its full of middle class nobs and there poxy kids being little sh1tes and it stupidly exspensive. Whats wrong witha proper pub with proper pints and proper pub food.
Re: Good old Gurkhas
This raises a whole load of questions that I'm genuinely interested in the answers to:
Define middle class.
Do you mean all middle class people are nobs or just the people in the Sparrowhawk are nobs?
Define 'nobs'.
How do you know they are nobs if it's the latter?
Define 'proper pub'.
There is nothing wrong with a pub of any type, the ones that serve food, allow kids or cater for those that cater for drinkers who like real ale etc.
Define middle class.

Re: Good old Gurkhas
The middles class is be definition in between the working classes and the upper classes. They tend to be fairly well off and in my opinion absolutely up themselves. They pretend to be all like liberal and caring about the working classes but their self serving and arrogant and they make a mess of place. At the moment their moving into Crystal Palace and Sydenham and Gipsy Hill and their pushing prices up and brining their bloody specialist shops with them and I cant stand em. And their kids behaving like little gits in the pub all screaming and shouting and throwing stuff around. So yes I think all middles class people is nobs. And as I just been told off by admin for swearing Ill leave it to you to define nobs. And if you have to have 'proper pub' explained to you then you have my sympothy.

Mr Random Gent
Whilst some spoiled children often annoy me in Pubs or Coffee shops, me thinks you go too far.
You seem to be calling for good honest pub food only served in pubs. When I first started attending pubs locally , about
66 , no pubs in Sydenham did ANY food, good honest or not.
People actually were happy to cook their own meals .

Re: Good old Gurkhas
Your description of middle class makes me even more confused. Please define Upper class and working class as I still don't quite understand what you are saying.
I'm not sure what class I am.
I work, so am I working class? There are people who are poorer than me and better off than me, so am I middle class? I like to enjoy going out for a nice meal to treat myself, like Ghurkas, but I also like good food in gastro pubs so am I working class with middle class tendencies? I couldn't afford to live in London when I first came here in the 90's and was unemployed for a while too so back to working class I guess. I'm not a higher rate tax payer either and certainly am not rich. I wear second hand clothes, but like to dress fairly smartly. I went to a comprehensive school and a college but have dined with a president. I have no royalty in my family, my parents worked, my mum was a home help, my dad an electrician. I've never voted Conservative. So what class am I? I'm very confused.
I also have a child, who is normally well behaved, but occasionally has tantrums.
So am I a nob?
