Club Zanzibar Community Consultation

At our last community consultation forum we agreed that we would make some changes to our management policy at Zanzibar, in direct response to a number of complaints for local neighbours about late night dispersal, noise and anti social behaviour, primarily although not exclusively associated with the previous management of the Club.

In line with our commitment to address, as far as practical, all legitimate concerns, we have made a number of changes that we think will make a real difference.

First, of these, is to reduce the overall number of late night applications.

Second, and most dramatic of these changes is reflected in the clubs new music policy. We are now actively refusing to take bookings for a range of problematic youth orientated events, targeting instead, a much more mature clientèle.

Thirdly, we have an enhanced stewarding strategy that will minimise potential noise from late night dispersal. We believe that these changes, enhanced stewarding, demographic change in our customers profile and the onset of winter, will significantly reduce any potential disruption to the local neighbourhood.

In order to restructure our business model we have also decided to develop into a day time community hub, offering a broad range of day time services, a meeting place, conference and seminar venue.We intend to significantly enhance day time and community use of the building, reducing the extent to which the club is reliant on the substantive income generated by late night opening.

Finally, and more broadly, we have a number of exciting community and international based initiatives and events that we will be announcing over the coming months.

As we approach the busiest season in the entertainment club industry calender, we are considering applying for a Temporary Events Notice (TENS) for the following dates:

Christmas Eve
New Years Eve
Boxing Day Night

Prior to doing so, we are holding a community consultation about these dates on Wednesday 3rd December 2014 at 7pm at the club.

In attendance at this meeting will be the Zanzibar club management and Lewisham Police Service.

We would value your views on these three dates and our strategies for minimising any potential noise or anti social behaviour.

We are confident that the changes we are making and our efforts to ensure a much more responsive transparent and partnership approach to tackling local concerns, is the most effective and sensible way to seek to develop our business.

Reminder that the community consultation meeting is tomorrow evening - 7pm Wednesday at Zanzibar.

It is important for residents to provide feedback to Zanzibar as several TENS have been applied for to 4am and have been refused.

The police have been objecting to the 4am -

2. The notice was served on the Metropolitan Police (MPS) and Environmental
Enforcement (EE) and an objection was received from the MPS within the
specified time and in accordance with section 104 of the Licensing Act 2003.
2.1 These premises were subject to a review where the decision of the
committee to reduce the hours of operation to 0200hrs and the addition of
several conditions were consented to by the licensee and the magistrates
court on appeal. The same grounds disclosed for that appeal forms the
evidence base for the MPS objection to this notice.
2.2 This Committee also heard a similar application on the 15th October 2014. A
counter notice was issued.

The letter states that the police visited on the 19th October as the event was going on beyond 2am when a TENS had been refused.
