Stabbing on a train
Re: Stabbing on a train
Sorry I thought you implied the Police could only stop someone in the advent of a crime of serious violence. Probably got it wrong and apologies.
Re: Stabbing on a train
Surely complete random searches for weapons is what is required. We need to stop people carrying weapons.
Random searches with heavy penalties for weapons found is what is required.

Re: Stabbing on a train
My daughter was threatened with a knife for her phone, so I'm all for stop and search,
Even if it stop one fatal incident then I feel it is justified.

Re: Stabbing on a train
Given that the Met is still a racist institution, I would suggest that completely random stop and search is completely impossible in practice, even it was desirable in theory (which btw I don't think it is).
Re: Stabbing on a train
That's a bit strong Hb, do you know this for a fact?

Isn't Bensonby's point that it shouldn't be random, and doesn't need to be?hairybuddha wrote:Given that the Met is still a racist institution, I would suggest that completely random stop and search is completely impossible in practice, even it was desirable in theory (which btw I don't think it is).
What do you mean by completely random anyway, or is this just another example of a meaningless adverb? For me random means 'without a certain outcome', so tomorrow's weather is random, however settled the weather patterns, in the same way the outcome of the fair toss of a coin is random. Is one of these events completely random and the other not?
Stop and search goes wrong when the fairness of the basis on which it is carried out cannot be justified. Bensonby thinks this is more to do with the police being poor communicators than I do - I do think the police are systematically biased, but it only takes a significant minority of police to be racist for this be true.
It's hard to overestimate how much it matters for the police to sort this out, but I think it still helps to acknowledge that we all need the Met's normal, routine policing.
Re: Stabbing on a train
That is completely out of order HB.
Shame on you.

Re: Stabbing on a train
Definitely meant in the modern usage of the word. Not the correct, mathematic definition. It is impossible for the Met to stop and search people completely randomly for lots of reasons. Resources for one. Pressure of targets another. Genuine suspicion of a person for various reasons another. Racism another.Tim Lund wrote:What do you mean by completely random anyway

I believe this report was in 1999.
The alleged gentleman HB claimed it was now. Where is the evidence for this.

I have to laugh that the Mail were going mental about racists killing a decent young man but when the report said the police were also institutionally racist because they didn;t bother with black men being murdered the Mail went into one.
Reminds of the passage in Flat Earth News about a Mail reporter who was driving to Birmingham to cover a murder, received a call from the editor's office, don't bother the chap was black...
Re: Stabbing on a train
That report was in 1999, 15 years old! Now show me an up to date report that has the police force as racist.
You do the police force a disservice by insisting they have not improved their attitudes in 15 yrs.

Re: Stabbing on a train
How about you show me one that says it is no longer racist? If it has improved so much in 15 years such a clean bill of health must exist somewhere...Annie. wrote:That report was in 1999, 15 years old! Now show me an up to date report that has the police force as racist.

Theresa May branded the Lawrence revelations, some 21 years after the murder, as "profoundly shocking and disturbing", adding that "policing stands damaged today". She said the full truth had yet to emerge.
