Probably in the mid 70's , but when ever past it in later years was not encouraged by the punters outside.

I only moved here in mid feb so unfortunately have never been in the windmill.. Therefore I can only assume what the layout may have been like - if it may be considered a community hub building (or whatever fancy documentation/label it is) is there any option of it being something different/appreciated and used by he community other then:
A) supermarket - decent sized tesco and cost cutter (as well as londis) already there

B) pub - 2 already exist within a few minutes walk (foxes and the bricklayers arms)

Would the layout be accommodating/functionally and financially viable for something like a small cinema or theatre space? Realise this will merge well with a host of other threads re: Zanzibar space or cinema potential etc but just thought id bring it here as a thought.

Again, have no idea of the space but living round the corner from kirkdale corner my personal preference would be something different such as a arts space or sorts or a different style of pub/bar rather then either a) another supermarket or b) another similar type of pub.

The Windmill quite large inside. Was originally refurbished as a JDW pub in the 90's , but they sold of a few years later after The Capitol opened.

There may be two pubs still close but used to be many many more.

The Fox and Hounds and The Bricklayers Arms are sadly all that is left.

I'm not a pub-dweller so speaking wearing tin hat. What I don't like is that an ACV potentially can be ignored or set aside when superficially it looks like a sale to a supermarket is easier and almost certain to go ahead all else being equal otherwise. So I applaud that an ACV legal opinion is to be obtained by the Council - otherwise what's the point of the community asset provision?

If all else fails, I suppose it might finish up as yet another supermarket, like The Two Halfs has, but at least give it a chance to remain an ACV, if the new legal opinion sought confirms it is, be it a pub or something else as JMLF suggests.

Edited because I failed to spell ACV correctly twice!

Here here Mary. Some people just do not see the benefit pubs to the community. We need to save them and, what I call decent pubs, are also very important to the regeneration of an area.

Sydenham is crying out for another decent pub. So let's not lose the buildings that are allowed to be pubs.

#ihatepurelake #greyhoundpub

indeed, if it becomes a supermarket, the chances are very slim indeed that it will ever be a pub again.
(I know - 'Sylvan Posts' used to be a post office, but that's an exception to hundreds of pubs closing every month)

I live around the corner from the Windmill and I'd love to see it remain a pub/social space but preferably one that sells nice food/beer and has a good atmosphere... not that I get out much as mum of a 10-month old but it would nice to have somewhere like this to go for lunch or when I can steal away; at the moment we go to the Dartmouth Arms or Dolphin. We only went in once when it was the Windmill.

I'm interested in what the ACV will do if it stands. Does it give a six-month 'stay of execution' in which time an investor would have to be found?

Not at all old chap.

When walking by you can tell be the behavior and diction of those outside as to what the pub would be like inside.

Suffice to say, I did not consider they would be devotee's of The Bard.

How ridiculous. It is a working class community...

You'll moan that footballers don't recite The Bard on scoring goals next

MWAV

So you are saying that working class people ( whatever that means in todays world ) , have no ability to understand the finer points of our language.

I would have hoped The Bard was for everybody.

No I'm not. How ridiculous to assert such. You do know footballers etc go to university...

Not all of the customers at The Talma are the Mr Sweary type.

Your sweeping generalisations are about as accurate as Dennis Leighton is to map reading.

To be honest the main reason I did not frequent the establishment in later years was their lack of niche real ale.

I was made aware of this by others.

So you don't actually know if they did have a decent real ale.

As I said others whom I respected checked every now and again. Tended to be stuck with the old mass produced rubbish.

I don't like beer.

But I do think it would be wonderful if Late Knights or Antic would consider taking on The Talma. The interior woodwork is stunningly beautiful and it's a proper old historic pub.

I don't like beer either, which was surprising for Czechs when I lived in Czech Republic.

A zillion years ago, a friend of mine was arranging a BBC hospitality (fancy word for an "everyone's working through") lunch on a studio day. Her Producer asked that included in the spread be some Czech beer and egg sandwiches. Catering interpreted that as HUNDREDS of egg sandwiches and gallons of Tartan lager. Nothing else ... not even a crisp.

No such thing as not liking beer. You just haven't found a beer that you like yet.

I'm currently proving this point to many non beer liking friends.
