Hi Tim
Should be right up your street , so as to speak.
Not sure I want to hear from a lady who spouts socialism , but then sends her son to a private school.

I like Diane Abbot. She voted against the Iraq war, opposed ID cards and campaigned against the renewal of Britain's Trident nuclear weapons.
She often goes against her party which I like. I don't like robots that are about their party rather than what they really believe. I'd be interested to meet her.

Presumably she'll be arriving by taxi?
Re: How we solve the housing crisis, 11th March
As only a short walk from the station I would hope not.
I believe she is the member for Ackney so can come by Overground.
Re Lee's comment about loving the lady .
We were fed lies about Iraq by our penultimate Scottish PM
I agree with ID Cards
Not sure about Trident. Jury out.

And, from your favourite rag:

£1,100 in taxi fares in 2009. For the MP for Hackney.

Diane might have a problem getting a hackney carriage these days .... guess that's why her good friend built the Overground from Hackney to Sydenham. She does use public transport - spotted her a couple of weeks ago at Victoria alighting from an ordinary train and catching the tube. Guess that's what you do when you ain't on Andrew Neil's gravy train anymore.

I wonder what she will suggest.
Pulling down the houses in The Thorpe's as far too full of the nouveau riche ? I am sure Council Tower Blocks there would be much better for society.
Build over Mayow Park ? Great Socialist World .

Will you be there to find out?

I hope to be there, but I doubt it I'll find what she has to say 'right up my street'. Ed Miliband was writing about this in the Standard yesterday, and my overall impression was the the Labour Party was at least being quicker off the mark than the other parties in admitting there was a problem. The danger is that they will push through housing which is less well planned than it could be, and not in the right places. There's also a danger they will go after landlords, channelling popular anger towards them, which could prove counterproductive. It's tempting to believe that if only we could use the existing housing stock more efficiently, things would be ok. This is what I used to think, but I don't think it's realistic. When I've look up the numbers previously, the number of empy properties in London is about what you'd expect from properties being empty between occupancies, and is anyway dwarfed by the numbers of people looking to move into their own homes.
It will be interesting to get a feel for what others at the meeting say, and what sort of discussion goes on about this within the local Labour Party, one of whose members it was who sent me this notice.

Good Luck with Miss Abbott.
Tim, pleased you are entirely happy with the Balls housing policy. I am impressed.

Re: How we solve the housing crisis, 11th March
I'm far from entirely happy with the noises Labour is making on housing, but I'm giving it a break this afternoon. But I hope anyone who's going to be moaning about whatever mistakes they make will be able to point back to what constructive suggestions they are making now.Eagle wrote:Good Luck with Miss Abbott.

Tim
I know you can be dry but you do realise she is a vile careerist who would definitely be considered a racist if she were white ?
My guess is that after her pronouncements , your own housing dogma will seem less jarring -but don't count on it ! What next , Geoffrey Archer on the modern novel and ethical governance ??
A very good evening
Nigel

Re: How we solve the housing crisis, 11th March
The poster does not suggest that Diane knows how to solve the crisis, and does say that it is a "public meeting to discuss how can we solve The London Housing Crisis with Diane Abbott MP". However her independent approach is very attractive, even if you don't always agree with what she does, and her contributions thought provoking, which cannot be a bad thing. I hope this discussion continues after 11/3.

Re: How we solve the housing crisis, 11th March
Reminder for this Tuesday
Re: How we solve the housing crisis, 11th March
Clashes with Forest Hill ward assembly. A large chunk of sydenham is in Forest Hill ward. Completely bizzare our ward boundaries.
Re: How we solve the housing crisis, 11th March
Did anyone go to this meeting?
