Victorian Fireplace specialist wanted
Hello. Has anyone had a fire place reinstated in their house or flat in the area? I am blessed to live on Crystal Palace Park Road, and I have two closed fireplaces I want to open up and restore. A builder from Fos Hill contacted me via rated people but then stopped answering my calls. Has anyone got a trusted contacted? I am going to try Avalon in Kirkdale. Any tips on a decent non rip off place to find restored period fireplaces in SE London would also help. Thanks for reading.

Try the Old Bathhouse at the bottom of Sydenham Road next to The Bell pub, think the chap who runs it is called Peter.
He has loads of fireplaces, is reasonable and can advise on the right type of fireplace given size of hole and age of property. He sorted us out with a lovely cast iron fireplace for our late Victorian house and sure he can recommend a good trades person too.

Both of those suggestions are good. We got our fireplace from the bath house. It's lovely.
You will need a FEMA registered contractor for an open fire. We have a wood burning stove that's approved for smoke control areas. You can't have an open fire here unless you burn smokeless coal.

We used Crystal Palace Fires in CP. HE's been doing it for years, helped his dad when it was his business.
Carries a big stock of reclaimed and IIRC his son-in-law does the install.
They we're clean, tidy, on price.
We're getting them to do our new place too.
Hope this helps,

you don't legally need a registered contractor(HETAS) to open up a fireplace as long as it is approved by building control .
Be aware that old chimneys may not be lined or the lining could of failed and can leak combustion gases into your or a neighbours property, with potential lethal outcomes. This is a very informative website:

We had our fireplaces restored by Ward fireplaces and RPS. Both recommended

We used Wards Fireplaces for one in our dining room. As our renovations progress we'll be having them back to refurb one we have in the hallway and put one in the front room too. They were a little difficult to get a hard date out of but once we got one they turned up on time and did the job well.

We used Avalon to replace two fireplaces in our house. For £200 on top of the cost of each fireplace, he removed the old concrete and ceramic tile arrangements, installed the new reproduction cast ones, and made good. He also sold us and fitted a nice bit of slate, as a hearth, for one of them. Only thing he doesn't do is get rid of the rubble, although all the loose stuff is bagged, and there are rubbish clearance services around.
He's not particularly demonstrative, but is reliable and trustworthy and won't give you the hard sell if you go into his shop. Would definitely recommend him.
