New barriers at Sydenham Station

Don't know if anyone else is interested, but apparently they'll be opening for the first time to the public, with no special ceremony, 6.00 am Monday 23rd.

I think there should be a ceremony of some sort. They must be very special barriers considering how long it's taken to install them. That said, I wouldn't get up at that ungodly hour to attend if there was one.

I hope they stop people pushing through at the same time as another person. Very annoying. They only save about 2 seconds , is it worth it.

Looked really good this morning. 6 barriers instead of 3 and less of a funnel effect into them. Should make peak times faster. As for people pushing through at the same time I suspect they are exiting without a ticket rather than saving 2 seconds...

They are very clever coming from nowhere to squeeze behind you in one or two seconds. I turn round just before entering the gate , then as I go thought a criminal squeezes through from no where. How do they do it.

Interesting that Sydenham station always seems to have a uniformed staff presence at all times of the day. Penge East, probably because its Nat Rail only, always seems to be staffless, apart from the staff in ticket office (when it is open).

An underground staff member told me once that they can't challenge people even when it is obvious they are barging through without paying.

If someone is suspected of a criminal act and defrauding your employer , why do nothing. What is happening to our world.

So you'd advocate at least one uniformed member of the police force at every single station in the network to catch a handful of fare dodgers? Because the last time I checked station staff have the same power of arrest as you or I.

I'm sure there are better ways of using police resources...

I have seen station staff stop and question travellers , insist on details etc. However tends to be the more elderly and infirmed they stop who are unlikely to fight back.

You say the same power as you or I. I thought everyone could make a citizens arrest ?

Wouldn't you say the way the travel prices constantly increase (in excess of inflation) is a criminal act? That the public are absolutely powerless to do anything about being fleeced every single day/journey. If we have to let them get on with it (without a say in how much we believe we should be charged and subsequently conform); IF individuals do want to commit a 'criminal act' of not paying for a train then station staff TOO should conform to those individual's decision to avoid paying and press on regardless at the station barriers.

It's obvious why there's a problem with individuals not paying, they're forced to pay unfair charges and that IS criminal but conveniently not in the eyes of the law.

Does it not strike you that if these criminals don't pay their fare that others will have to pay it for them, through the price hikes?
