Thanks, 14BR, I enjoyed that. Although I've always been puzzled why this piece is called 'Pachelbel's Canon', when it sounds much more like a chaconne (passacaglia) to me, i.e a series of variations on a repeated bass line (which I think in effect is what the guitarist is doing in the clip you posted). Gosh Robin, they must have been truly wild times! Reminds me of the many evenings during those exceptionally hot 76/77 summer nights when I would pull some floosie in a nightclub also with the "unfocussed adolescent desire" to show me the soles of her feet in the wing mirrors of my very first car, a Triumph 2000TC (with optional overdrive). I seem to remember the likes of Thin Lizzies "The Boys are back in Town" generally blaring from the Blaupunkt (push button) stereo.

'Unfocussed'? Sounds pretty specific to me.

I'm talking about not long after the Lady Chatterley trial and before the Beatles' first LP. Things may have been different in the seventies.

Brilliant band IMO, and what better than the great concept album Animals from the genius of Roger Waters
combative dogs, despotic ruthless pigs, and the "mindless and unquestioning herd" of sheep that eventually rise up to overpower the dogs.

Wishful thinking, the guitar playing on this album shows Gilmour at his best.

I'm reminded of Sinatra's scorn for rock 'n' roll:

“It fosters almost totally negative and destructive reactions in young people. It smells phony and false. I think Sinatra's super sophisticated music from the 50s & early 60s is great, but there could never be many to reach his standard, so some truly dreadful stuff got recorded.

I suspect "I hear singing" would be better without Ethel Merman - maybe just played instrumentally.

Is it sour grapes? the pain of knowing that your time has come to pass? Elvis wanted to have the Beatles done in so I'd imagine it's the same for all of us, I suppose when synth pop and rap came out I didn't want to acknowledge it, but once you accept it and have a deeper look you can find quality, especially within hiphop music, partly because hiphop recognised what went before and totally embraced it, sampled it and ripped it off. What initially appeared to be plagiarism actually turned out to be very creative and original.

There was a lot of pap being peddled in the 50's re rock 'n' roll, just like evry era. There were some very important pioneers that changed the face of music. I recognise that like any kind of music there will be a large amount of it that isn't very good, there isn't an equal measure of stuff that is absolute quality from the likes of Buddy Holly who took it very seriously, his contribution is imeasurable.

There is no doubting that Sinatra was the best at what he did because he believed in what he was doing, which is one of the reasons why I loath the "X Factor" It's anti music, because those who are involved are only seeking their fifteen minutes of fame which IMO isn't good enough because we are left with nothing more than uninspiring Karaoke which styfles creativity, having said this it isn't all bad news, there has been some great music from the past 20 years or so and I suppose as we get older our tastes become a little more grown up. I cringe at some of the stuff I listened to when I was a kid.

Rock 'N' Roll is dead.
