Thanks, 14BR, I enjoyed that. Although I've always been puzzled why this piece is called 'Pachelbel's Canon', when it sounds much more like a chaconne (passacaglia) to me, i.e a series of variations on a repeated bass line (which I think in effect is what the guitarist is doing in the clip you posted). I see however from the interesting Wikipaedia article that the original does have a canonic element -see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pachelbel's_Canon

Here is another of my favourites - I associate it with the summer nights of my youth and the deliciousness of unfocussed adolescent desire.

Gosh Robin, they must have been truly wild times! Reminds me of the many evenings during those exceptionally hot 76/77 summer nights when I would pull some floosie in a nightclub also with the "unfocussed adolescent desire" to show me the soles of her feet in the wing mirrors of my very first car, a Triumph 2000TC (with optional overdrive). I seem to remember the likes of Thin Lizzies "The Boys are back in Town" generally blaring from the Blaupunkt (push button) stereo.

You know that chick that used to dance a lot?
Every night she be on the floor shakin' what She got
Man I tell ya she was cool she was red hot
I mean she was steamin'

And that time over at Johnny's place
Well this chick got up and she slapped Johnny's face
Man, we just fell about the place
If that chick don't wanna know forget her

There surely are no finer lyrics.

'Unfocussed'? Sounds pretty specific to me.

I'm talking about not long after the Lady Chatterley trial and before the Beatles' first LP. Things may have been different in the seventies.

Because someone was playing this while sitting next to the Regent's Canal when I went up north recently.

Actually, I'm not sure if it was this version - doesn't sound as R'n'B (in the 60s/70s sense) as I remember.

Pink Floyd

Brilliant band IMO, and what better than the great concept album Animals from the genius of Roger Waters
combative dogs, despotic ruthless pigs, and the "mindless and unquestioning herd" of sheep that eventually rise up to overpower the dogs.

Wishful thinking, the guitar playing on this album shows Gilmour at his best.

Thanks, Capt Mike - I think I can see the point of that.

Meanwhile, here's something really to bring out the animal in you.

And here's something I've just found which I've been hunting for (on and off) for more than fifty years, ever since I heard it on Sam Costa's show on the Light Programme. I really dig that counterpoint.

My God, it's dreadful.

Cheese from the 50's and early 60's has gone all moldy.

I'm sure it's only done to wind me up, do you actually listen to this sort of stuff? it's beyond Musak it's total shite.

I'm reminded of Sinatra's scorn for rock 'n' roll:
“It fosters almost totally negative and destructive reactions in young people. It smells phony and false. It is sung, played and written for the most part by cretinous goons and by means of its almost imbecilic reiterations and sly, lewd—in plain fact dirty—lyrics, and as I said before, it manages to be the martial music of every sideburned delinquent on the face of the earth.

“This rancid smelling aphrodisiac I deplore. But, in spite of it, the contribution of American music to the world could be said to have one of the healthiest effects of all our contributions.”
I think Sinatra's super sophisticated music from the 50s & early 60s is great, but there could never be many to reach his standard, so some truly dreadful stuff got recorded.

I suspect "I hear singing" would be better without Ethel Merman - maybe just played instrumentally.

Is it sour grapes? the pain of knowing that your time has come to pass? Elvis wanted to have the Beatles done in so I'd imagine it's the same for all of us, I suppose when synth pop and rap came out I didn't want to acknowledge it, but once you accept it and have a deeper look you can find quality, especially within hiphop music, partly because hiphop recognised what went before and totally embraced it, sampled it and ripped it off. What initially appeared to be plagiarism actually turned out to be very creative and original.

There was a lot of pap being peddled in the 50's re rock 'n' roll, just like evry era. There were some very important pioneers that changed the face of music. I recognise that like any kind of music there will be a large amount of it that isn't very good, there isn't an equal measure of stuff that is absolute quality from the likes of Buddy Holly who took it very seriously, his contribution is imeasurable.

There is no doubting that Sinatra was the best at what he did because he believed in what he was doing, which is one of the reasons why I loath the "X Factor" It's anti music, because those who are involved are only seeking their fifteen minutes of fame which IMO isn't good enough because we are left with nothing more than uninspiring Karaoke which styfles creativity, having said this it isn't all bad news, there has been some great music from the past 20 years or so and I suppose as we get older our tastes become a little more grown up. I cringe at some of the stuff I listened to when I was a kid.

Rock 'N' Roll is dead.

Long live..........

It's all over.

Oh why do you catch my eye then turn away?
I thought we said all the things we had to say
Shaun said he saw you holding hands with your new friend
How does it feel to know you've just won again?

Don't give me that
Because you were seen
Everyone thinks he looks daft but you can have your dream (ohh)

Can I keep that book of yours and maybe this one too?
Oh sure, I'll bring them round tomorrow if that will do
Was it really full? They must have queued there since half past three
Oh I didn't go, was it a good film? Well that's just me

Don't give me that
Because you were seen
Everyone thinks he looks daft but you can have your dream

Oh you can have a dream

Guess who I saw by your old house just the other day
That kid we used to think was mad, but now he looks okay
I think someone's here, look out the window, I can't make out who
Oh I'd love to stay but I've really got so many things to do

Don't give me that
Because you were seen
Everyone thinks he looks daft but you can have your dream

Don't give me that
Because you were seen
Everyone thinks he looks daft but you can have your dream (ohh)

I quite enjoyed that. Is it "indie rock"? ( I googled 'The Wedding Present'.) If so, how can I recognize it as such if I hear any other examples?
