Eagle, Wholly sympathise with view to recovering cost of clean up, etc. It would probably end up costing
more to recover these costs than Lewisham Borough would gain from any efforts. LB would have to act
(as they already have) within the Law, the travellers probably won't.. No real justice here!
If I was an itinerant vagabond tarmac drive laying/thief/rubbish dumping/anti-social wrongen I'd expect to upset the neighbourhood especially if I'd just commandeered a car park for the best part of a month, caused a load of badness for the locals by starting huge fires and pumping out the blarney stone kid's latest hit on a 2kw pa system which was probably robbed from a fairground and left the place looking like a fly-tippers paradise I'd start moaning about victimisation especially if people started demanding that the cops escort our clan out of the borough, I'd make the place my home for the next 10 years.

We had a problem with travelers at a place I worked at years ago, one of the little ones did a no2 right outside the front door, most people moaned and were a bit nasty about it but I thought it was funny the firm got them evicted and when they left they didn't take their rubbish with them either which wasn't surprising.
Obviously we're very pleased the travellers have now moved on. We are currently in the process of cleaning up the car park which will take longer than we had hoped because there are many tonnes of debris. We will also need to repair the damage done to the tarmac and the height and width barriers. Once the clean up is complete we intend to install concrete sleepers to try to prevent further trespassers. Unfortunately, we are restricted in what we can do because the car park is used by delivery vehicles for local businesses. However, we are continuing to look at what further measures we can take to prevent any reoccurence. The Council will need to cover the cost of both the clean up and the repairs which is not insignificant. We are giving consideration to reclaiming costs from the travellers but this may not be realistic.
Unfortunately, the clean up is taking longer than we originally hoped - there is a lot of it. However, as soon as this has been completed, the concrete sleepers will be fixed into place. These are long, thick, heavy blocks of concrete that will be positioned at the entrance to the lower car park to prevent entry.

Whoa!! Hold that! What about those of us law abiding council tax payers who use the lower car park? What are we supposed to to? Levitate?

Hopefully concrete blocks that will prevent wide caravans but not cars Mary..
We will of course ensure the concrete sleepers are strategically placed. Incidentally, you may be interested to know the clean up is now complete and we removed 67 tonnes of waste.
