I know there is little to no chance of recovering this but I thought I'd try.
After attending a friend's very upsetting funeral today, I went to the natwest cash-point on the high street. There, not really in my right mind, I walked away leaving the cash in the machine. The people in the bank checked and it had not been turned it.
Thought I'd put this out in case anyone found it.
Very best of luck. There are some honest people out there.
Many moons ago I found over 300.00 in carrier bag on street which I handed into Police. Turned out takings from Pub and they gave me a free meal.
Many people I spoke to said I should have kept the money. I disagree. I take it you have mentioned to Police just in case.
SWMBO found a £50 note outside the bookies. Handing it in was problematical so it went into a charity box instead.
Hopefully if you don't get it back it will have gone to a good cause ... or back to the bookies
I think cashpoints do suck the money back into the machine if you forget to withdraw it but only after a period of time (not sure but I'm guessing 30 or 40 seconds to allow for fumbling with wallet, etc). Obviously that needs nobody else to see it there first.
If the cash was presented and not taken the ATM will retract the cash that is not taken, it puts it into a separate part so it can be identified. Depends on ATM but over 30 seconds and the ATM gets anxious and wants to take it back usually.
So assuming this is what happened the ATM will be over when balanced. If you were using the same card and ATM brand (ie Natwest card in the Natwest ATM) then raise it with them either in branch or over the phone. They should have processes for an ATM dispute.
If you were using different card and ATM (i.e Barclays card in the Natwest ATM) you still need to raise it with your card issuer not the ATM provider. Your card issuer will check there was a debit and raise an ATM dispute, again there is a formal process for this and SLAs are usually around 14 days.
One other thing to note. Are you sure the cash was actually presented to you as it could be that there was a cash trapping device on the ATM (a small risk I should point out) - it a little plate that sits over the presenter and grabs the cash. Again worth reporting if you have any doubts.
Thanks for all this. I checked with Natwest. They did confirm that after 30 seconds the cash will be pulled back into the machine. But, it was about noon so the High Street was full and I suspect someone got to the machine before those 30 seconds! Apparently the cash did go out and several check-ins in the past few days with nothing. Its really my own fault. I was truly out of it after a devastating funeral and not paying attention to the real world.
Well to be fair to whoever took the money, knowing it wasn't theirs, they wouldn't have known about the funeral. And to be clear about ny own view is that they shouldn't have done what they did - the funeral and circumstances surrounding why the OP forgot the money have nothing to do with it.

I would ask them for evidence it was taken out including the video footage from the camera outside.
