Hi, I just wondered if any of you saw the news today about Portsmouth and the 20mph speed restrictions on residential roads? And they seem to be without speed humps - horay!
I suggested this recently to our councillor Marion Nisbett who then forwarded me a letter from the traffic dept at the council about speed humps (they couldn't install them unless there is a history of accidents on particular roads, despite carpeting most of the quiet residential roads south of Stanstead road in Forest Hill with them. I used to live there and very much doubt they are all hotspots - I never saw one accident or heard of one in those roads in five years).
Anyway, I don't actually like speed humps for all the obvious reaons, but I can't see why we can't have limits without the humps. I know some people will always break speed limits regardless but surely most of us when told we are entering a 20mph zone would slow down.
I know when driving around Bromley when one of their signs flashes up 'slow down' and/or clocks my speed I do slow down instinctively as it is easy to go over speed limits without realising it.
Any thoughts?
