which I'll translate - probably badly - as "knowing nothing about the past, speculating about the future, I only talked about myself, spouted my opinions and casually criticised everyone else out there". It seems to nail something about callow youth rather better than the more obvious regrets about sex and alcohol implied in the English versions.Ignorant le passé

No madrigals so far on this thread, I notice. Here is a very simple four-part one which I first sang forty years ago and which still moves me. The artificiality of the words and the music somehow distances you from the emotion, and thereby enhances it.
