Like Manhatten or Chicago?

Didn't Napoleon Bonaparte bulldoze the old medieval Paris to create a city that is surely more beautiful and a more pleasant place to live than London.

Urban renewal with attitude!

Meet-ups? It has been some time since the last in the Dolphin. I'm sure if you suggest a time and a date and offer the first round the usual suspects will rapidly appear out of the nicely insulated woodwork.

Over to you!

Yep...then they preserved it.

;-)

Yep, a meet up to chew the fat sounds good. As I am in the process of moving to Sydenham and am not yet a 'local' can I suggest that we try either the Dolphin or any new establishment that may soon open such as the Blue Cafe?

Great idea leenewham. I have started a new thread here to see what interest there might be before everything is demolished:

demolition dates

There are some gorgeous buildings on Sydenham Road and Kirkdale but some are not immediatley visible because of some modern shop fronts which protrude too far onto the street. Which is a shame..

Back to the question of demolition. Judging by this link, the site at Perry Vale won't last long.

This is not a 'better building' if that's the new building in the link, it's another boring box of a building, pierced by translucent squares.

RIP the DUKE.

The Duke is the 3rd building to be built on it's site; I wonder what will be the 4th?

Judging by the plans - it's not the work new development I've ever seen. I can't say i envy some of the new residents view though, (the railway line) or location, (opposite the urine-soaked underpass). I dare say the developers will give both features a suitably glossy spin.
