Gas/Boiler trouble.
N-Power came round on Tuesday to put a new meter in, before they left they checked the cooker was working, but "forgot" to re-lit the boiler. Had no heat or hotwater for 48 hours. Can anyone in SE26 advise me please, Gas & Electric "frighten" me.
The boiler is Baxi Bermuda (45/3M).
N-Power say its down to the customer to "fix" the boiler, even though the guy on the phone said the workmen "should" of relit the boiler. Now they want a massive call out charge.

I sympathise with your good self. I cannot understand how they left without turning the appliance on.
To suggest a call up charge in this case is outrageous.
Not sure how you can force them to come though.

Have e-mailed, twittered and phoned them with no luck.
Will give it to midday, then will attempt to "fix" it myself.

Are there controls for the boiler that you can access (I had a back boiler many years ago and am trying to remember how it worked!)? There should be a simple mechanism a bit like lighting a gas cooker. A knob to turn or push to release gas to the ignitor and an ignitor button.

There is a orange button, a dial (0,low,1,2,3,4,high) and a grey button. I've followed the instruction but still no "spark" or pilot light.

Assuming it's the same as the other Baxi I've seen - have you held down the grey button (On the right?) and then press the orange button (on the left), if it doesn't light first time try again (keep the grey held down). Once it lights keep the grey one down for about 20 seconds before releasing.

In my experience, you may have to press the 'ignite' button several times before it works. A gas fitter told me once that it is OK to remove the glass inspection panel (assuming there is one - we may not have had the same sort of boiler, can't remember) and light the pilot with a taper. But I never actually dared try this, and I can understand others feeling the same!

Its a "Baxi Bermuda (45/3M)".
Means nothing to me....spoke to n-power an hour ago, passed on to 7 people and was "promised" someone would call tomorrow. I'm giving it 'til 4pm.

The Baxi Bermuda 45/3M (from memory) is a back boiler with built in piezo ignitor. As others
have said thermostat must be turned up so that boiler is calling for heat. With thermostat
on boiler turned up and depressed - push igniton botton untill you see the pilot light up,
continue to hold thermostat pushed in for about 30secs - 1 minute - when you release it
the pilot should (hopefully) stay lit. Try several times leaving a few minutes between attempts
to allow gas to clear.
If it won't stay alight (assuming power is present) then thermocouple could be burnt out.
The thermocouple is a failsafe device which sits into the pilot flame - it will turn gas off if
no heat (pilot flame) is present. Thermocouples are notorious for giving up the ghost after
boiler / pilot light has been shut down and user attempts to re-ignite!
If you don't have instructions you may be able to download from their website (always handy)!

Morning. Quick update, N-power came back on Friday to fix their mistakes and all was well until this morning. My new "card" for the meter ran out (its all new to me) and I put £20 on it. Put the money onto the meter and the heating/hot water doesn't work. Again.
Trying to speak to someone at N-power now (been waiting 10 minutes all ready).
How did we let it get to the stage where "our" major companies treat us no better than sh*t on their shoes ?

These things in life are always a wind up!
How did you get on with working out how to ignite your boiler? Sounds as though
it will need relighting each time your card runs out..

Your supplier does seem a bit suspect. I will avoid them. I am British Gas and they are not too bad.
Being on card payment must be very expensive. I suggest opening an account if possible,

Right: Update. Fella just left after totally dismantling the fire/boiler. Said I need a new pilot & ignition. Lit it manuelly and put it back together again, warning me that the pilot may go at any time (6 mins/6 years). Also, must keep some money on the meter at all times, otherwise the pilot will go out again.
It was easily explained and even I understood it.
Just wandering why its taken aweek and 4 visits by different N-Power engineers to put it right and explain it.
