GREYHOUND WALL ART: A FEW DAYS LEFT TO SUBMIT YOUR IMAGES
First of all. Thanks to everyone who already submitted images!
If you haven't sent your images yet, the deadline to do it is
October the 8th (next Monday)
This is a visual of the winning artwork that will appear on the rear wall of the Greyhound Pub (although the final one will be a little different to this with a lower horizon so the greyhound is more visible). It's an image of a Greyhound made up of images of Sydenham.
Also, this is completely optional but you can have your name credited on the wall. I just want to encourage you (a little bit) to include it. The credits will appear on the bottom right corner of the mural, they won't go on top of the images you sent so don't worry about them being covered by it. They'll look something like this:
TO MAKE IT WORK WE NEED YOUR IMAGES.
They can be anything to do with Sydenham. Old photos, family photo’s, landscapes, artworks, doodles, images of parks, places, people…anything Sydenham related. There is no limit to the amount of images you can send in (but we will edit and vet them).
They need to be supplied digitally as high a resolution as possible. They’ll be cropped square (around 10cm x 10 cm)
You’ll need to fill in a disclaimer online, please don’t forget to do this before submitting your images:
We have set up a mechanism for getting your permission to use the images for the mural (you retain copyright) and collecting images via our blog (see below).

How will we know if our image is selected? ( obviously Before the mural is made)

Re: GREYHOUND WALL ART: A FEW DAYS LEFT TO SUBMIT YOUR IMAGE
If our images are selected, Lee - then how will we know whereabouts they are on the mural? I know you're not producing a generally available key, but presumably you have a computerised one for when you chose where you're placing the images.
If you would be prepared to make this key available as a download, I'd be happy to pay for a copy. Apart from finding my own image (if it's included) I'd love to have some way of identifying all the other people and places on the wall.

Hi Mary.
I k.ow we have talked about this before. Sorry, we aren't producing a key, we never planned to. There are thousands and thousands if images, to have a key saying someone's image is 400 across and 469down isn't going to work. Sorry, It was never planned like that. I hope that doesn't compromise your enjoyment of it when it is done. I hope I have been clear about this as I have said before that there will be no key.

Hi Annie, a big thanks to you and everyone that have submitted images. We will sift through them Ann in due course and let everyone know to the best of our ability who has images in the mural. As you can imagine we have a huge task ahead of us with this!

Sorry Lee, I obviously wasn't making myself clear. I meant the "key" or whatever form you have it in of the template you've been working to when creating the image. Presumably that keeps track of whose image is where?
I was just suggesting that you could sell a download of this so that we and future generations would know the details of individual images of the wall art. It would be useful as well as fun, especially as the images are likely to be there for a long, long time.

Re: GREYHOUND WALL ART: A FEW DAYS LEFT TO SUBMIT YOUR IMAGE
Hi Mary,
As far as I know it's not possible to produce a key like the one you're referring to (unless we do it manually), the software that helps us compile the mosaic takes all the images from the folder you specify in your computer and produces the basic image, this will need work to finesse it, some manual retouching you could say, plus it's a case of trial and error playing with different setting to see what produces the best result (and this takes a looooong time). If the software produces some form of key then of course we'll make it available to whoever is interested, but I'm afraid we just don't know if that will be possible.

Re: GREYHOUND WALL ART: A FEW DAYS LEFT TO SUBMIT YOUR IMAGE
Just a quick update on this, many thanks to everyone who has submitted images. We have been through most of the images which are fantastic. We will be in touch with everyone to thank them soon.
We still have quite a few images to go through and we are seeking permission from other parties due to some copyright issues.
The only images we have dismissed have been rude, non sydenham or political symbols (we feel the wall should be unpolitical, so people can be in there, but not rosettes etc).
We are also trying to get permission for a few images. We tried to get permission for a book cover from Norman Hunter illustrated by Heath Robinson, but were denied by the publishers unless we paid a fee which was a shame and not in the spirit of the wall and the generosity of all the people who have submitted images so far. It's a shame as it would be nice to celebrate Norman Hunter on the wall.
As we are still going thorough images, if anyone has any others they would want to submit for the wall and think it's too late but really want to be part of it, please feel free to send in images. We can't guarantee we will include them, but we have had some really fantastic images so far and it would be great to get some more.
So a huge thank you to everyone who has been part of this. It's taking quite a while to put it all together, but I will keep everyone updated.
Regards
Lee & Ariana

Refurbished and Reopened in 2012
That is surely taking the word refurbished to the limit. I thought it was demolished and rebuilt.
Good to see will be open next month anyway.

It's a visual Eagle from the original proposal, don't take it literally, it's not the final image.
Re: GREYHOUND WALL ART: A FEW DAYS LEFT TO SUBMIT YOUR IMAGE
I am a bit confused about where this mural is going so grateful if someone in the know could enlighten me. If it is going, where I think it is going, which is the long wall that runs parallel to the new flats and at right angles to Spring Hill, then surely it is going to be hard to see it's intended effect? Given that there is only a narrow pathway there and I would have thought that to get the full effect, one would have to stand way back to see any intended image with real clarity. How is this going to be achieved?
Surely to be so close up to this mural all we will see is a series of pixels without seeing the whole picture? I have seen these murals before and they only work if you can stand well back to view them.
I look forward to someone enlightening me on this.......... or perhaps the mural is only going to be small?

Hi Gilly,
Yes it is going on the back wall of the Greyhound.
This was a concern from the beginning, it's been raised before and talked about on this forum. The judges discussed it and thought that it would work and I was worried about it to start with. We actually I paced it out and put sections on the fence in the back garden to see if it worked, which I believe it will.
The mural will be 13m wide and 5m tall. You will be able to view it from an angle The further away you are, the more you will see the Greyhound, the closer you are, the more you will see pictures of people, art, the Greyhound through history, gardens, parks, buildings, family pictures and portait, famous resident sof Sydenham, paintings, flowers and a whole range of different, sometimes unusual, odd and often historic, images. There will be a couple of thousand different images.

Re: GREYHOUND WALL ART: A FEW DAYS LEFT TO SUBMIT YOUR IMAGE
Thanks for that Lee. Let's hope it doesn't get 'graffitied' as it is in such a vulnerable position - out of the way like that.
I hate to be a killjoy but experience tells me that many inspired ideas, however well intented, often fall flat when it comes to the day-to-day realities and practicalities of life. I doubt whether Lewisham Council will be spending their future budgets forever cleaning graffiti off the back wall of the Greyhound. I predict there will be lots of denying of ownership of said wall by Lewisham Council since it has a locally sourced mural on it. Believe me I am talking from experience here as I work for another local council in the highways department and exactly the same issues occurred where locals took it on themselves to commission a mural to brighten up a dreary underpass. In that respect perhaps the Greyhound mural, being in a secluded and well hidden place will be a godsend.

I don't know why,but I thought it was going on the inside back wall of the greyhound?

Re: GREYHOUND WALL ART: A FEW DAYS LEFT TO SUBMIT YOUR IMAGE
Nope - going by Lee's response to my query, it will be going on the external back wall of the Greyhound I believe where it will only be viewed by those using the pathway to the front of the flats. Lee - care to confirm this to Annie please?
Re: GREYHOUND WALL ART: A FEW DAYS LEFT TO SUBMIT YOUR IMAGE
Yes, the artwork is and has always been intended to be outside, behind the greyhound pub on the external wall. It hasn't changed position from the original competition. The tile corridor is being put back in some form inside. But this is totally separate from the mural.
