£1.5 million of Government cash to pilot schemes

Post by DesignByBen »

Hi,

Very surprised to see Sydenham and Kirkdale mentioned in DesignWeek and thought I might share...

article..

http://www.designweek.co.uk/latest-oppo ... 76.article

In short, the article says ...

"Fifteen towns across the UK have been chosen to receive a share of £1.5 million of Government cash to pilot schemes developed as part of retail guru Mary Portas’s review of the high street."

"Forest Hill, Kirkdale and Sydenham in London, where there are plans to renovate 12 empty properties and improve signage;"

As a comment at the bottom of the article mentions... £1.5 million split between 15 places equals £100K each. Which will then be split in Sydenham/Forest Hill between "12 empty properties" which would be £8333 per property depending on how how much is spent on improving signage?

Which in my mind isn't bad, but no way as good as the headline makes you first think! Oh well, at least Sydenham is being noticed and at least some money will be coming its way!

Design week have rather edited the bid I'm afraid Ben!

The Portas bid (which we were a v small part of) is quite wide ranging and is more than the few details in the Design Week article. It's not a simple case of splitting the money between the 12 shops. There will be a town team, 2 community hubs, 12 pop ups, markets etc. Everything in it has been costed and it has match funding.

More info here:

It's been mentioned on these forums a few times.

It's a good, solid framework for a better future for Sydenham, Forest Hill and Kirkdale.

It's good news, but I don't understand why kirkdale is being listed as though it's not part of sydenham. Good if it means a third of the cash will be spent on kirkdale, but we shouldn't lose our sydenham branding, especially as this was the historic heart of the town and until relatively recently called sydenham hill road and the high street.

I only ask because this is being described as forest hill, sydenham And kirkdale and I honestly don't know why. I live in fear of suddenly finding myself branded as living in "kirkdale village" and finding street signage changed.

Oh sorry Mary now understand. Kirkdale village , do people really take that seriously.
Of course Upper Kirkdale , from Fox and Hounds , was the original High Street.
