...On Sydenham Park Rd last night!!! 40pence worth of change, along with the ashtray got taken. Window smashed. I am wild!!!!
I hate whoever did this. We have two young kids who we cant out with now in the car until we get the window fixed. This is gonna take ages as we can't afford it right now!!! Argh!!!!
What goes through a thief's mind when it's an old car with 2 carseats in the back??? God, I hope they get worse.

Grrr our car got broken into..
Re: Grrr our car got broken into..
I sympathise. At least they didn't realise the value of the kid's car seats. That would have been painful.
In the old days one would have just wandered down to the nearest scrap yard and got a replacement for a few bob and as it was all mechanical behind a clip-on cover - you could fix it yourself. Job done in a morning. Things are now more complicated with many more models and scrap yards closed off.
May be this is an opportunity to review the economics of switching to something like Streetcar. Its parked locally, its PAYG and when it gets broken it isn't your problem. Most people are horrified at the cost to hire it for a couple of hours to go to the supermarket. But that is related to the true cost of the vehicle, insurance, maintenence and so on. Stuff you pay but only see the petrol cost for a particular journey. Overall on the year it may lower the cost and provide a nicer more reliable car. And you can evaluate each journey's real cost against the alternatives (taxi, bus, train, foot ...) on a level playing field.
And not having as many cars parked 23 hours a day on your street might make it a nicer street. Especially for the kids.
Do report the damage. I doubt it will lead directly to any culprit but the more clumps of statistics the police have about trouble spots - the more chance they may address the underlying problem/gang/idiot.

anyone should be able to leave their car without the prospect of being broken into.
I know people will raise their eyebrows and say "not again" but when I was a kid, our door was left on the latch, or a key under the flower pot on the doorstep, everyone knew where it was,but it was there so it didnt get lost-not because someone would steal it or go in the house.although that did unfortunately happen once, as the 70s approached.
Re: Grrr our car got broken into..
Annie - why did you need to leave a key under the flowerpot if the door was left on the latch?
Re: Grrr our car got broken into..
I hear you Stuart, definitely be looking in to hiring a car. At the moment it's not feesable due to our financial circumstances but something we could possibly budget for in the future for when hubby starts up his business.
Annie, when we lived in Auckland it was very much like that. People didn't bother locking up just for a quick trip to the shops and everyone looked out for eachother. I don't think London could ever be like that again. Too many bastards eager to take what you've got, even when it's not much or superfluous at all.

Re: Grrr our car got broken into..
If someone was in the house somewhere = door on latch so you could come and go as you please, if everyone was out the key went under the pot.You should understand I lived in a three storey victorian house with two front doors.rshdunlop wrote:Annie - why did you need to leave a key under the flowerpot if the door was left on the latch?
Why do you feel the need to question my post?
