What is the best Indian restaurant around Sydenham?

Post by Cathal »

I've recently moved to Sydenham and I'm still looking for a really good Indian (I include Nepalese and Bangladeshi under this label) restaurant in the area. So far, I've tried Ghurka in Sydenham Road (average) and Ghurka Cottage in Crystal Palace (poor). Any recommendations?

Garam Masala on Sydenham Road is pretty good. The problem with Indian restaurants is that the food depends on the chef. The Sydenham Road Ghurka was excellent until a couple of years ago, when they changed chef and became, as you have noted, average.

I'd rate Ghurkas highest, Garam Massala vary's a lot but they changed chefs and after a few disappointing meals we didn't go back, plus it's not a nice place to be inside with the neon blue fkykiller lighting inside. My main problem with Ghurkas is that when I eat there there is something about the ambient noise that makes me feel ill. It feels a but claustrophobic. I get this in a few restaurants. Unless they are nice places to be i'd rather get a takeaway.

Since having the incredibly cute sleeping baby who is currently sitting on my knee after crying for the last hour we have only been getting takeaways anyway (we dont get out much these days!). We have a new favourite which is brilliant:

Barakah
299 Sydenham Road, Sydenham
London SE26 5EW
020 8778 6007

It's takeaway only, but they should have a restaurant, they are very very good!

I know it is a little further away, but babur in honor oak is a very impressive Indian restaurant. They have an excellent range of innovative dishes. They also do take away or pick up.

Without doubt the Babur is the finest Indian around, if not London. Also worth a mention, and a little closer to home is Cinnamon, formally Cafe La behind Forest Hill Station.

We've had an excellent delivered takeaway from the Yak and Yeti in Crystal Palace, and they have a restaurant. The Ghurka in C.P. isn't great. The modern place opposite Westow House is a little chilli-oriented rather than flavour-oriented. The Crystal Palace Tandoori was a good takeaway too, and they use Free Range chicken according to their leaflet.

Neo India in Crystal Palace is very good if you like to break away from threw identikit high street indian that many lagered up individuals demand - they specialise in Mauritian fish dishes and meals are made to order, as spicy (or not) as you like. They also avoid cooking with ghee do you don't come out feeling that you have swallowed a lead lined football.

Crystal Palace Tandoori is also very good, with dishes that also stray nicely from the norm.

We had a delivery from Namaste on Sydenham road just before Xmas and it was excellent. Pleasantly surprised as I hadn't been there for ages as a couple of years ago the food wasn't all that. Would recommend giving it a go.

Cheers

I also think Barakah is really good and shame it is only a takeaway. The in laws even request it when they are in the UK and they are of Indian origin!

Barakah is pretty good I agree. Garam Masala has always been fine. V good value for money if you pick up and pay cash. Babur is by far the best around. I've always found the takeaway from its other shop pretty good but obviously nowhere near the quality of the restaurant. I've never had a good curry in CP so don't bother. Two places in East Dulwich are worth a look. Ganapti not far from Dog Kennel Hill and Indian Mischief on Lordship Lane (south Indian veggie). Tandoori Nights is the other place on Lordship Lane that people rave about but I've always found it disappointingly average.

I can't believe I didn't refer to this on Sunday night when getting a takeaway, very much looking forward to trying Barakah as it's pretty local. Looks like Garam Masala and Barakah gives us lot down the hill some star spots.

We got a takeaway from Barakah on Friday night. Amazing, really really tasty, lots of flavours and nothing had that generic taste so many takeaway, eat in curries do. Abdul the boss was a lovely chap too. Definitely a favourite, can't wait to go back.

You have to try India Gate opposite Sainsbury in Forest Hill. The food is AMAZING and the guys that work there are the nicest, funniest people, they are great hosts. India Gate is awesome

I've not eaten in every local Indian restaurant but sampled a few. India Gate is the best I've tried in and around Forest Hill, Sydenham or Dulwich....Need to try their homecooked style dishes which are the best, called handi style (I think). They are going to start serving Indian tapas which is very tasty and something a bit different
