This may be old news to many but I've only just become aware of the fact that if you have a rail card (including Gold Cards) you can get 1/3 off off-peak Oyster PAYG fares and the off-peak price cap.
You just need to get your discount entitlement loaded on to your Oyster card.

Don't bother going to Sydenham Station and ask them to include the discount on your Oyster because they can't/won't be able to do it. This came as no surprise as I have found the staff at Sydenham most unhelpful since London Overground has taken over running it, especiallty those who were not at the station when it was the responsibility of Southern railway.

Yep, I found that out today but, to be fare, it seems they don't have the right equipment.
Overground stations should be able to add the discount entitlement but Sydenham (and Forest Hill I think) can't. I'll get it added at a tube station or at London Bridge.
