London Marathon

Post by kster »

I’m training for the London Marathon (which will be my first) and just wondered if anyone else in Sydenham was training for it. The reality of the training schedule scares the living daylights out of me, in particular the long weekend runs. It is one thing to run 5-6 miles around here, but it might be pretty lonely and hard work in the later stages when you have to run up to 20 miles.

So, if there is anyone else who is training for the marathon and would like to buddy up for some long weekend runs, then please let me know. I’m following the Sam Murphy training plan, but the other training plans I’ve looked at have similar schedules for the long weekend runs.

By the way, I’m collecting sponsorship for the National Blind Childrens Society. Please feel free to make a donation at www.justgiving.com/stevesmarathonmadness

Hi kster

How exciting - I will also be doing the London marathon for the first time (along with my other half). We have applied for the last 3 years and have finally managed to get places throught the ballot. The actual marathon is on my birthday so I am extra excited!
We went for the first time this tuesday to the Dulwich Park Runners club and they were very friendly and supportive so I would seriously suggest you give them a try. They have members from all over the area and even from going once I have picked up some valuable advice. About 20 of their members are doing the London Marathon this year so there's plenty of support.
We used to be members of the Dulwich Runners (easy to get confused between the two), who are also a great club but they seem to have a higher percentage of faster runners who take it a bit more seriously. The 2 clubs meet on different nights of the week so it depends what fits best round your schedule - we have opted for the Dulwich Park Runners because of that.
Whether you fancy joining a club or not I would be up for doing a bit of training with you on those longer runs you mentioned. You can PM me if you like (and let me know how fast you are!).

That's great you are raising money for the blind childrens society. I am hoping to raise some money for a worthy cause and ideally would love to support something local. The obvious choice is St Christophers hospice which is very worthy but I feel they are very well supported already and so if anyone know of any other worthy cause out there feel free to let me know. Apparently St Bartholomews needs some building work doing so thats one contender so far...

Lucky you. This was the 4th time I've entered, but the only time that I've done much training before I sent off the application. But I still didn't get in, so I'm on a charity place - hence the plug on the previous email. I'll PM you my timing details and if you and/or your other half are similar then great.

I've had a look at both websites and Dulwich Runners does look a bit more serious. The Park runners seem to do Tuesday and Thursday, which is a bit more flexible. I'll get down there next week.

Hello kster and Juwlz

Not running London but I will be doing the Prague marathon this year which is a few weeks after London on 13th May

I ran Paris last year, which was my first marathon, in 4hrs 9mins, and I'm aiming for under 4hrs this year.

I sometimes do my long runs with my other half, but he is somewhat faster than me (aiming for 3hrs 30mins) and it is a bit demoralising to be trailling behind! But having said that I am trying to push myself so I get a faster time this year! :)

Are you aiming for a particular time or just to finish? I wouldn't mind buddying up if we are at similar fitness levels?

The long runs do seem incredibly daunting don't they! But based on last years experience it is amazing how as the weeks go by it becomes acheivable (if you follow your training plan! ).

Hi Weeble.

You sound like you might be similar to me pace-wise. Though I haven't done a marathon before I did a half marathon in 1hr 49, so I am aiming for around the 4 hr mark (hopefullly). My other half did the Paris Marathon in 4hrs 20 and he is definatley going to be a bit faster this year so you will most likely be on a similar level to one of us.
I will send you a PM with further details of possible meeting up etc. if that's ok.

Weeble,

Both you and Julwz are more experienced that I am. The most I’ve done is a 10K, although I have entered the Fleet ½ marathon to get a bit more race practise before the big one. At this stage I would view a 4 hour marathon as a stretched target, but I like a challenge. If you are free on Tuesday do you fancy meeting up the Dulwich Park Runners meeting?

Juwlz - sounds like we are similarish! My only half marathon time is 1:58 but I'm pretty sure I could do 1:50ish now.

Kster - neither me or my other half had ever run further than 10k when we started training for the Paris marathon last year.

I'd be up for meeting at the Dulwich Park Runners next Tuesday. :)

I'm also doing the London Marathon for the first time. Raising money for the Royal British Legion.

For those of you thinking about popping along to Dulwich Park Runners running club I can't recommend it highly enough. I have been a member of the club for about 4 years and are now on the club committee.

We meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 7.45 and are located at Dulwich College Sports club on Dulwich Common.
Some club members also meet at Dulwich Park on Sunday mornings for the long Marathon training run.

We have runners off all abilities in regard to distance and speed. We never leave people to run alone and are a real friendly bunch.

you can find out more information from the website.

www.dulwichparkrunners.com

hope to see you there.

Running

Post by JoeP »

Hi everyone

I am quite a keen runner but have had to defer my London marathon place until next year due to injury. Just to let you know that there is also a friendly club down in Beckenham http://www.beckenhamrunning.co.uk/. Dulwich is also a nice club. I run against them both in a league during the summer months and they all seem like a nice bunch. I didn't realise there were so many runners in Sydenham though :D

If you're looking to do a pre marathon half, Fleet is very good as is Paddock Wood. Cheers.
