Fruit Picking Near Sydenham

Post by G-Man »

Ello

Does anyone know anywhere near Sydenham that you can get the bus or train to to go fruit picking? Fancy making some jam before the season is over.

Cheers

Hi G-man,
Hayes Farm usually sell pick your own strawberries. Heres their Telephone no. 0208 462 1186
By Bus take the 194 to Westwickham High street where you can pick up the 119 to Hayes Farm.
Will probably take you an Hour or so. Or you can get the train from Lower Sydenham to Hayes Station and pick up the 119 outside. This option would be quicker.
Hope this helps.

My neighbour's pear tree will soon be heaving with fruit and we need people to pick it - all for yourselves naturally. Normally the fruit falls off and rots on the floor - such a waste.
If you G-Man or anyone wants to pick pears to take home in the next few weeks, please PM me for the address.
AND my neighbour knows about this - it's not dodgy!!

That sounds promising for me too KM, as I'm building my own cider press and scratter this year, and am on the lookout for local apple (and pear) trees in peoples gardens where the fruit is unused. I'll pm you my details. Thanks in advance.

KM - thanks for your message!

Would be interested in knowing how the heck you make a cider press? Also JR have you noticed there is a whopping great apple tree in the beer garden at the Dolphin. If you fancy approaching them and doing some picking I'd be up for it, most end up as windfall I think.

Another thing JR, I never contacted you about the beer, I wasn't mega pleased with my first batch, so it'll be the second I make when I move that I'll be up for the swap on. Hope that's good for you.

Thanks G-Man, I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to be making a cider press, it'll be a bit of trial and error, based on several different designs, and built from wood that I've 'scavenged' from skips, etc. It may not end up a work of art, but hopefully it'll hold together long enough to do its job. The making of press and scratter will be next weekend (13th/14th), if you're interested in helping out, (or watching and critiscising), send me a pm with your details.

beer swap sounds good - my cider from last year is going to be bottled soon, so I'll have some available.

I have also noticed humans collecting fruit from the mulberry which can be seen here in Loxley Close- although it is in fact in the back garden of the Golden Lion.
