Identification is complicated by the fact that the houses were at first named, then numbered, then the evens were renumbered in 1927, but by my reckoning, its pre-1927 number was 54 and it was first called Oaklands, but Valetta in directories from 1885 on.

Some early inhabitants were:-

1878-81: George Ferrier
1885-07: Sydney Adams
1891: No census entry
1894-99: John Alexander Silk
1901: Mrs Harriet Charlesworth
1902-06: Thomas Glass
1907: No directory entry
1910-27: Hon Sir Cornthwaite Hector Rason and Lady Mary Evelyn Rason
1929: Miss Heaton
1931-35: No directory entry
1936: William Matthew Hayes
1937-38: William Matthew Hayes + William Henry Draper + Eric Marchant + Mrs A Rance (110a)
1939: William Matthew Hayes + Roy Victor Cranford + Eric Marchant + Mrs A Rance (110a)

The most prominent occupant was Sir C H Rason who was born in Somerset in 18-Jun-1858 but emigrated to Western Australia in 1882 where he was a politician. He became its Premier in 1905 but resigned in 1906 to take up the post of Agent-General in London. Following his knighthood in 1909 he retired and became director of various rubber and mining companies including Bovril Australian Estates and Secretary of Bovril Ltd. He died on 15-Mar-1927 and is buried at Elmers End Cemetery.

Many thanks Chris, that is much more information than I expected and I am very grateful indeed!

What information would I need to obtain to confirm your assumption that the pre-1927 number was 54? I would like to be as certain as possible about the original name as I intend to install a name plaque on the building. Is there a numbered map from which I can cross check if I know which one is my house, or another way?
thanks,
Karl
