Sydenham Walkabout (15-Oct-06)

Post by Falkor »

Greg let me down (reliability isn't one of his strong points), so I had to do the walkabout on my own; don't worry, I'm used to going it alone. But I'm less confident in exposing my camera to potential muggers; best toy I ever owned. I don't even bother charging my mobile phone, but I take my camera everywhere I go. I checked out some very interesting places today, which never made it to film..I mean stick. Following up from the Tunnel Adventure (14-Oct-06) and successfully reaching the other end, here's today's pics... (click first one for original size)

Back of the derelict shop with faded "Walls Ice Cream" sign out the front (see walkabout from 01-Oct-06). Also seen is the back of the parade reading "High Street buildings" (or something) on the front, adjoining the Fox and Hounds; any ideas when this was built?

I would also like to know when the parade of shops at the bottom of Dartmouth Road was built (Steve Grindlay put up a 60s photograph recently). Also, there is meant to be an auditorium hidden behind some shops; where? Any info on the old church down Clyde Vale? Finally, what was the building--in-between the Forest Hill Library and Baths--used for?

Sorry Falkor. I'm 100% definite for next weekend though. Any chance you might be able to finish slightly earlier than normal so we can really get some distance in before the night closes in?

I don't mean to be unreliable but when Katherine says we're doing something that means we're doing something

Next weekend she has 'approved' :D

it was a girls home, for orphans and the destitute.

i think it still says 'girls home' on the brickwork outside?

apparently there was a boys home nearby.
