Campaign for a new Lewisham Primary School

Post by LewishamMontessori »

A group of local Lewisham parents have got together to campaign for a new fully government funded Lewisham primary school under the free schools initiative. We are putting together a proposal for a new and different school following the Montessori method.
There is a serious shortage of primary school places in Lewisham, with 19 schools having to take an extra ‘bulge’ class in 2010/11. This is stretching current schools to the limit and our campaign would see the creation of a Lewisham Montessori primary school with new school places. Support for the school is growing and we are keen to hear from others who would like to support us.
You can follow our campaign and get in touch with the campaigning parents on our Facebook page here:

It’s important we can show there is demand for the school so if you share our vision please sign our petition here:

Is there any way I can oppose the proposal?

I did not see many non-white faces on the facebook page.

I wonderd how long it would take for concerned parents in the area to campaign for a free school.

You're basing your judgement on the 6 faces in the 'like' section of the facebook page out of the 37 people who have offered their support, of which the 6 you saw were the only one's that are visible due to the (racially impartial) software used by facebook?

Tell me, did you recieve any form of education yourself, tjc?

Fair enough, but there are still only 6 faces attached to the facebook account holders who have pledged to attend. Did it not occur to you that they're the only parents who bothered to reply, irrespective of their race, out of all those who were invited?

Since I don't know you, I'm willing give you the benefit of the doubt and accept your word with regards to your education and current position at a "successful secondary school".

In fact the Swedish government now see their free schools program as a mistake that has increased social division. The issue has been widely reported.

tjc - on Wikipedia, "The issue has been widely reported" would have earned a "citation needed" link. So here are some links from Googling 'Sweden "Free Schools" critique'.

Crudely:

from the left: http://www.antiacademies.org.uk/Home/pa ... reeschools

from the right: http://www.spiked-online.com/index.php/ ... icle/8662/

and from the strenuously neutral something a bit less clear-cut http://fullfact.org/factchecks/have_fre ... weden-1567

I am one of the parents campaigning for a Montessori Primary School in Lewisham. I'm glad to see some debate on the subject of free schools. The parents who have come together to form this group are big fans of the Montessori teaching method.

Below you'll find a case study about a school in Manchester that used the Montessori method to turn around a failing school:

Here you'll find some information about how the Montessori method handles primary education specifically:

Best regards.

It's a shame to see this debate close before it properly started. The borough is facing a shortage of 700 reception school places by 2014. If the LEA isn't able to address it, then who will? Parents must show their concern for the children of the borough.
