The corner of this parade--some shops built in front of houses--has recently been demolished, which brings me to my question... Once being the old high street, can anyone please tell me roughly what period were all these houses/shops originally built? It can't be long after the 1820s cottages...
It is difficult to put a precise date to these buildings, but the feeling is that they were built during the late 1820s. The building that has just been demolished was occupied by Benjamin Parsey (a major local builder) and his descendents from before 1837 until after 1902.
Oh wow, so I gussed correctly... most of those shops are pre-1837... It's just my history books don't mention when this original high street was built... cheers Steve!
BTW, who remembers Talkies video shop along that stretch??
