ANNOUNCEMENTS PLATFORM 1 SYDENHAM STATION
Re: ANNOUNCEMENTS PLATFORM 1 SYDENHAM STATION
Hopefully he won't be so bad now (fingers crossed anyway). It's been quoted as he's replaced/replacing the tannoy announcements, but he seems to be working alongside the announcements and notice display. Everytime a train is announced over the tannoy he looks to see when the train is coming down the track and before it pulls into the station he's saying the destination which has already been announced and displayed, then it's stand behind the yellow lines followed by mind the doors. Every 3 minutes or so is very excessive and annoying and totally unnecessary. He has obviously been given that job to do but it's needed further down the platform where there's no display or tannoy announcements, and further away from residents, and why does it have to be so loud?
Re: ANNOUNCEMENTS PLATFORM 1 SYDENHAM STATION
I don't understand why they need such an announcer on the platform?
Why not install a tannoy further down the platform for the people there?
Or put up a sign saying "Green trains are for London Bridge, Orange Trains with Tube-style seating are for Dalston Junction"?
Also, move the information display to a visible position on the platform - currently it's obscured if you're more than 10 metres down the platform.
Maybe they could put up a brick wall and a platform roof like any decent train station would have. That would also block the train noise from the residential properties.
Lastly, who builds houses with single glazing so close to a railway line?

Re: ANNOUNCEMENTS PLATFORM 1 SYDENHAM STATION
I do find it all a bit silly - we are adults - we knew how to stand on the platform on May 22 - so why from May 23 - do they feel the need to tell us how to do it and and furthermore if you run for a train that turns out the be Dalston service - you have 4 stations to work that out and get off so you can still get a LB train - on a separate note - anyone know whats happening with the roof of the down platform - is it going to be like Honor Oak Park - where they have partially dismantled the old shelter and done not much else - it would seem to me - they have rushed this OVERGROUND TFL ownership in to meet deadlines when the stations on the route south of Surrey Quays are not at a standard for these services - any news on this lenghening of platforms which was talked about previously??! - must go my keyboard is smoldering - too much use in too shorter a time
Re: ANNOUNCEMENTS PLATFORM 1 SYDENHAM STATION
This whole situation is a farce. As I walked down the platform this morning I was forced to walk the "wrong" side of the yellow line because it has been put so far back that the people sitting on the benches make it impossible to stay on the "right" side. No-one pays any attention to this guy anyway, maybe his time would be better employed keeping the station clean?

Has anyone read The Evening Standard today?
Page 13, they have reported about the complaints lodged by nearby residents!

I read all of this in astonishment
Blimey, it must be a slow news day at the Standard (love the journalistic attention to detail, not even bothering to use the correct rail station sign!!! Haha)
You will think me obtuse but I use the station every day and have hand on heart not noticed the annoucements (but I am usually haring it to get the train so not hanging around). I read all of this thinking "goodness, I really am unobservant/ distracted."
Can I say, however, that I've found the station staffing additions really welcome. A number of them say hi every day, and are really pleasant and friendly. I also find the station just feels safer with more staff and people about. Just wanted to add a bit of balance. (I will head to the station tomorrow with interest)

SILENCE IS GOLDEN!
It has been sheer bliss for the last couple of days. I haven't heard Mr Jobsworth aka Megaphone Man, and it is really noticeable Just goes to show what the power of the press and a few disgruntled people can acheive. I agree that the station staff are friendly. Whenever I use the station they always say hello, not all of them are bad

The platform staff are only doing their jobs. I don't blame them.
It's the managers who mechanically enforce rules without the application of thought and common sense that are the problem.

I agree, Digime. I felt quite saddened for the guy, being ridiculed in the press actually, if you can call the Standard that. As I said, I hadnt noticed any of this at all before this post. I'm pretty distracted. When I got to the station yesterday, he was the subject of lots of covert attention. I noticed that more than I ever noticed his announcements. I felt bad for him, actually. I'd be pretty annoyed if doing my job had made me the subject of public ridicule. It's sad
Shame London Overground hadnt listened to the feelings of those living nearby and allowing this to happen to an employee
