We are all members of the family who lived at St Mary's on Sydenham Hill from 1932 until it was sold and demolished in 1952.
In order to answer a number of queries and inaccuracies we would like to post the following notes.
We are the grandchildren of Mr and Mrs WH Pawley who were the caretakers of St Marys and were employed by the Fathers of the Brompton Oratory in Kensington.
The land was originally acquired by the Fathers of the Brompton Oratory. Father Faber designed the house and gardens . When it was formally opened Cardinal John Henry Newman attended the ceremony.
The House was used as a country retreat for the priests based at the London Oratory. Father Faber wrote many of his famous hymns and poems at St Marys. The house had its own chapel on the top floor of the main house and mass was celebrated here whenever priests were visiting the house. The grounds contained many fine specimen trees which were planted by Father Wilfred Faber. At the Wells Road end of the garden was an enormous pond which was again part of the original design. In later years this was sadly used as a dumping ground for local rubbish.
The cemetry was also situated towards the Wells Road end of the property and was used as a burial place for deceased priests from the Oratory. Coffins would be brought down from London and taken to the main house prior to being taken in procession through the garden to the cemetry. When the house was requisitioned by the LCC, the bodies in the cemetry had to be disintered (by special dispensation from the Catholic Church). The exhumed coffins were often in a very poor state and thus new outer casings were made. All of the deceased were reburied at Gunnersbury Cemetry, in exactly the same configuration. Father Faber's remains were not taken to Gunnersbury but given special memorial in the Oratory in London.
Our family lived in the house and lodge and suffered air raids throughout the Second World War. The house had deep cellars which were used as air raid shelters whenever the sirens sounded.
When the house was sold all of the internal artifacts were removed. More important items, including many books from the library, were taken up to the Oratory in Kensington.

I've sent invitation to collaborate to Falkor and Steve, and permission them to invite others to collaborate.

Apologies if this is teaching grandmothers to suck eggs, but to add more photo icons, this is what you do:

1. Hit edit
2. Hit the 'Add a placemark' icon
3. Place it at the right location on the google map
4. Enter a title in the window that pops up
5. Select 'Edit HTML' in the line below in the window
6. Right click on Falkor's photo as in this thread, and select 'copy image url'
7. Enter <a href = "[url]"> [the text you want to appear]</a> where [url] is what you paste in from the last step
8. click on the icon selector top right of the window to find the camera icon. BTW - it's not too difficult to produce bespoke icons, if we want something more distinctive.
9. Hit 'OK' or just click away
10. Hit 'Done' in the panel on the left

And you're done. Except that I know this hasn't always worked when I've tried to show people how to do it on their machines - but it's worth a try, and I'd be happy to talk on the phone. PM with any problems

Interesting to see the leaflet about Hitherwood referring to train services from Sydenham Hill taking 14 minutes to Victoria - these days they still do, but only outside peak hours, on a good day!

I'm glad everyone appreciates my work as a compiler! I can't take credit for any of the black and white photos or the many different book sources that have been used, but I feel the most important thing in local history is to gather together all the different sources, combining them to see things in context--gaining a true understanding.

The roadworks goes deeper than local history. Sydenham Hill is an ancient boundary between the parishes of Lewisham and Camberwell. When was it first formed? Does it have a Roman origin? Of course it isn't straight, as it simply follows the ridge of the hill, so the latter is unlikely. The roadworks cut right across the middle of the road, revealing the layers underneath and a rare opportunity to examine them. Unfortunately, I'm not an archaeologist, but the photos may come in handy for future researchers, or if the Lewisham Borough formed an archaeological group in the future, or Time Team ever visited the neighbourhood. Remember: no Roman building foundations have yet been found in Lewisham, BUT the Romans did at least walk across Sydenham Common (included most of Upper Sydenham), as a major Roman artifact was discovered there, which I plan to try and locate soon; perhaps somebody has a high quality photo of this already or knows what museum it's located in?

I don't see why not with Beckenham. After all, large-ish areas of what is now Sydders were Beckenham about 150 years ago and some of our roads are still in the parish of Beckenham, although now officially Sydders.

I don't feel too much of a connection with Penge though. But 'Pongers' are our nearest if not our dearest.

Beckenham and Penge are covered pretty well to exhaustion in the photo galleries of Ian's Beckenham History site at http://www.beckenhamhistory.co.uk/galleryintro_new.html He has access to an enormous library of old pictures that dwarf my collection. It would be a challenging, and perhaps superfluous, task to try to emulate his work here.

I am currently gathering material for a Penge History website (to include the nearer parts of Beckenham and a little overlap with Sydenham), but it will take a different form from a photo gallery.

Ian has done an amazing job and even inspired me to research the history of Beckenham. His galleries are indeed exhaustive in terms of "photos", but unfortunately, a lot of Penge's history is hidden from the camera and to local historians to the point of ignorance. Illustrations add a completely different side to Penge's history, revealing timber framed buildings that could have possibly gone back to the Medieval times. I think I will start a new topic soon.

Just discovered the website and the lovely pictures of Sydenham Hill.
My grandmother used to work at Holmwood, 63 Sydenham Hill and is listed as a kitchenmaid there in the 1911 census, working for Hannah S Robinson.
I have 2 postcards of Holmwood and 1 of the cottage at Holmwood taken around the time that my grandmother worked there. Any use to you?
