Iris and the rest of Envirowork Lewisham have been busy organising their patch of Mayow Park for tomorrow.
Children can decorate angels and/or make Tibetan Peace flags written with their own message to hang on the tree during the tree dressing event between 11 and 12 noon. We have even arranged a qualified ladder climber to hang them for us! Please bring any special materials you would like to use....
This is Envirowork's first Christmas Fair at their depot (behind the pavilion) and a good opportunity to show everyone all their plans for developing a community garden. There will also be a craft barn for children to make their own tree decorations, mince pies, information on growing your own, etc.
FOMP will be organising the annual tree dressing 11-12noon in front of the pavilion.
Where was the Christmas Fair? I walked around the park at about 12.45 on Sunday afternoon but there wasn't any sign of it. Couldn't even see any posters up.
Its a shame the fair wasn't better sign posted. I walked out of the park and saw the sign. I thought how odd it was that it was over then realized that it was back behind the pavilion. I think many people may have missed it. Yesterday morning the sign ‘Christmas Reefs for sale’ was up and that seemed new. But there were no reefs anywhere to be seen or purchased.

Why didn't you go in to the yard and aksed any of the people or staff ? We have many people with disabilties working and helping sorry they spelled the word wrong!!
We wanted to keep it low key this year as it was our 1st year.

You learn something new every day on this forum. I thought 'Christmas Reefs' was some sort of in-joke to which I was not privy, but a quick google suggests that it is in fact a recognized variant of 'Christmas (Advent?) wreaths.' Does anyone know how long the new variation has been around and what its origin is? (It's not in the latest version of the Oxford English Dictionary).

I thought the reefs were great. You could easily find them behind the barrier...
Christmas Wreaths? Isn't it about birth and happiness not death mourning? Well no, even Wikipedia is a bit vague on the subject. Looks to be pre-christian in origin, as is most of Christmas, and related to the leaves Julius Ceasar wore, except a bit bigger and on a door not a head.
Can I just say that I turned up to watch the tree dressing in the park then went into the Envirowork yard and had some delicious mulled wine and a really good home made mince pie.
Envirowork is to be congratulated for taming this once wild and overgrown neglected area. Their plans to expand the provision of nursery work and training for disabled people need to be applauded.
Although last Saturday's Christmas Fair was held in conjunction with Friends of Mayow Park's annual tree dressing, Envirowork is there behind the old pavilion all year round and you should be able to call in to see what they are doing on other days and see the plans for improving the park - keep an eye open for the open gate.

Hey folks - its the season of goodwill and all that stuff. People organise an event. Great. People choose to go. Great. Some people can't find it. Well perhaps better signposting next year. It is difficult to get everything right first time.
Blow each other some kisses and build some more goodwill for next year ... please.
