anybody know whats goinhg on inside the library ?
i went in today to use a computer and most of them have been removed and a large plastic sheet covering the wall where the computers use to be.
sign say's building work and its going to be like this for sometime.
that could mean anything with lewisham library service.
i switched to sydenham after i found foresthill a pain with the childern, don't want to look for another library again so soon.
sydenham library
saw a bunch of surveyors going in the libaray yesterday and me being some what nosey i asked what was going on.
it would seem the plaster work is coming off the walls in the libaray and they think there might be some rot in the roof as well.
does not look good for our local libaray, i just hope lewisham don't see this as a chance to shut it down.
maybe someone in the know should keep a eye on this.

As much as i like Sydenham Library architectually i think it would be a good idea to move the Library to the 'nabourhood centre' in a more central and busier location, and maybe divide the place up or move what ever goes on in the nabourhood centre to the Library, i always find it more of an effort to get to Sydenham Library so i always use Forest Hill even though its always very busy and quite often if i have the car end up going to Dulwich Library if i dont want to wait an hour and a half for a computer and want a child-free environment. Sydenham Library at the moment usually has quite a depressing feel to it, i dont know why but it does, would be nice if they could do something with it and make the area more vibrant in and around the park outside and maybe i wouldnt mind walking a bit further to use it.

I spoke to the librarian on Saturday and works are in hand to replaster the ceiling cracks and take down the boards covering two windows now that grills have been fixed to the outside. Whilst the re-plastering takes place the IT team are working on extending the cables so that more computers are available online.
Over the years we have considered moving the library to the Naborhood Centre but it is a well used day centre for people with learning disabilities. When the Council considered rationalising the day centres a good few years ago the support for the Naborhood was overwhelming. It has expanded to provide services for those residents who previously attended the Rotary Centre as this is now closed due to subsidence.

I don't know what these new grills look like, but I have said before that the old chicken wire effect on the windows did not make this building look at all inviting.
I was told at one of the Sydenham meetings it was because of break-ins. But why Forest Hill, Crofton Park and many other Lewisham libraries can have glass you can actually see through and well-maintained buildings and this pretty sorry-looking part of Sydenham has to 'make-do' with a building that is far from looking its best, is beyond me.
The same goes for Sydenham Green surgery. Great services, extremely depressing building (outside)!
I think if things are well-maintained they are less likely to be a target for abuse. I know there will probably still be the odd incident but I really think there would be far fewer than the powers that be think!
You just have to look at buildings which have suddenly been boarded up, they start to get rubbish dumped outside etc. How often does an occupied house get a mattress thrown into its front garden?

glad to see that lewisham are at last going to do something with this old library,
would be great to get a littlle more daylight in there.
the back of that library is in homepark i think thats why they get so many break in's
but once again it comes down to lewisham not putting the money in to these buildings to keep them at their best.
ok foresthill looks good now, but people have short memories.
i used that building for years, the only reason it got a refurb was because the roof fell in.even then we were treated to half a libaray service while lewisham sat on they hands
that libaray was cold and leaked badly.
now since its a netcafe with screaming childern i use sydenham
sydenham suffers from the same lack of funds plus the added tress dropping leaves in winter all over the place.
would be nice if they cut back some of the tress in home park to allow more light in.
