Proposed ‘Containers’ for mayow park
Proposed ‘Containers’ for mayow park
I’ve just seen that there are plans to build a bunch of containers in mayow park to house the bowling club. The obvious question is why are they doing this when there’s a disused building that would cost a lot less to fix up a bit? Does anyone have information about this?

According to Sydenham Society's latest e-mail:
Mayow Park Bowls Club facilities consultation
10.00am-1.00pm, Saturday 16 May, Pavilion, Mayow Park
Plans for a new facility for the Mayow Park bowls club have been received by Lewisham’s planning department and are now out for consultation. There will be an exhibition of these proposals in the pavilion on the morning of Saturday 16th May, with officers on hand to answer questions. We hope that as many people as possible will visit the park to look at the proposals and talk to Council staff.

I know people who use the bowling club and believe these containers are temporary but could be wrong. I believe the old park house has been let to go to rack and ruin. Even the cafe has closed.
Appearently it was planned to house the bowling club facilities out of the way beside the bondary of Bishopsthorpe but one of the residents , I am given to believe an ex local doctor , objected that their enjoyment of their garden would be effected.
All the above could be incorrect , third or fourth hand .
Anyway the bowlers need storage space etc , cannot see a problem.

Yes Eagle - you are correct. All of the facts in your posting (apart from those about the current state of the pavilion and cafe) are totally inaccurate.
So please, rather than recycling misleading (and damaging) misinformation about this application and one individual in particular would it not be better for you (and anyone else who wishes to know what is going on) to attend the exhibition on Saturday?

I briefly looked at something up on the notice board this morning in the park, can anyone confirm these plans will put in new Toilets for the bowls club just for their use?
If the bowls club are paying for these improvements then I don't mind so much but if it is council money paying for it then surely it should be used to improve facilities for everyone that uses the park?

Bowling Club
The Bowls Club has secured funding from The London Marathon Charitable Trust to provide accommodation for their purpose. Nothing is forthcoming from Lewisham at the moment for financial help with the pavilion/toilets, etc. for the members of the public.
FOMP and other Friends of Parks take the lack of toilet facilities seriously, as it keeps people in the park for longer, especially during the summer. It's not just important for children, but also for older park users who get caught short. Who would go to the park for a pic-nic if there's no facilities and you don't live nearby?
Yes, the ideal solution is to use the existing pavilion, but the Bowls Club say that this is an unacceptable distance from the green for walking and visually impaired players. They want accommodation on the edge of the green itself.
The original plans were unacceptable due to location causing potential damage to the ancient oak roots when installing utilities, the type of design in a historic park and question of how temporary is a "temporary structure"? These containers can remain for 20 years!
Please come along tomorrow morning and get the information at first hand to make up your own minds.

Just to let everyone know that the Architect's drawings are now displayed in the new noticeboard opposite the pavilion in Mayow Park.
Personally, I don't have a problem with the plans. I think by giving the Bowls Club new premises, it would free up the use of the pavilion for future public use (toilets, cafe, etc.).

but will it be used for those things, or will it be just left to be (further) ruined?mummycat wrote:Just to let everyone know that the Architect's drawings are now displayed in the new noticeboard opposite the pavilion in Mayow Park.
