Cobb's Roundabout
This roundabout is genius isn’t it. "Let’s improve the streetscape, make it safer!". Hello I didn’t realise we were expecting tanks! Well if they couldn’t even be bothered to make it level, they could as well have taken the chance to add some much needed greenery, even sponsored by the local trade mind you, if grass is too expensive. Yup nice one.
I think the flowers definetely have to come back to the roundabout, also i know i always go on about Bromley but they do do things with taste most of the time when it comes to landscaping, its nice when they have the little adverts in the flower beds to read when theres traffic etc, they also draw greater attention to the flowers and make the area look more elegant, heres what i mean...

Would be nice to do this i think. Even advertising 'welcome to Sydenham' or something. Ah so much could be done to make our town so beautiful!
What were they thinking with the current one. Where is the logic??

Before everyone works themselves up into a fury about this, can I point out that the Cobb's Corner roundabout will be rebuilt as part of the Sydenham Road Improvement Scheme - and that the rebuilt roundabout will be "greened".
As Pat Trembath has pointed out in a separate thread, an exhibition of the new road scheme including plans for the roundabout will be held in June in the former curtain shop on the junction of Queensthorpe Road/Sydenham Road.
I am certain that we can return to a well-constructed "green" roundabout once the new scheme has been completed next year.

Here are a few bits of inspiration for a greener roundabout.
I understand the current one is one of the 'improvements' Lewisham council made to Sydenham in the past, like the 'improvements' they made to the high street by offering money to shop owners to rip out the original shopfronts and replace them with cheap metal ones.
Well done Lewisham Council! 0 out of 10 so far!
1. Sedum

Low maintenance, used for 'green roofs', holds a lot of water and stops it going back into the water table which can cause flooding. And you dont have to mow it!. It has already been used for a roundabout as seen here.
• Lewisham 'excuse rating' for not doing it and leaving it as it is: 0/10 NONE
2. A BIT OF BUSH
Surely this isn't too difficult to do?
3. LARGE PLANTER
How about sticking something on it with flowers (but without the guy in red).
4. FLOWER POTS
And this?
Is this impossible?
5. SAY IT WITH FLOWERS
How about 'welcome to sydenham' or 'hello' or 'Crystal Palace was 'ere' (joke).
6. SCULPTURE
Perhaps a great bit of art (better than the one shown here obviously!, but hopefully you get what I mean).
7. MODERN
8. THE BIG GRAND ONE
Ok, the last one was a joke.
But seriously, how difficult is it to make a roundabout green?
Can anyone at Lewisham council comment on this? Are ALL of these options TOTALLY unviable? Honestly, if they changed it I'd forgive them for making it so horrible in the first place.

Yes Annie - would be lovely to have what you suggest - upright stones, or maybe the steel cylinders plus water feature. Unfortunately, following that route, there would have to be a 24 hour armed guard on the roundabout as well. After all, this is Sydenham we are talking about - not the town square of an idylic greek island, regrettably.Annie wrote:
I think the last one is best . Actually i quite like the upright stones, but maybe on a smaller scale with flowers around them,
Have you seen those cylinder shaped steel things that have water bubbling out the top? they look good ,but again with some colour around them.
Topped with the Sydenham Green Dragon weathervane remember!Annie wrote: Have you seen those cylinder shaped steel things that have water bubbling out the top? they look good ,but again with some colour around them.
