Hope you're recovering Coll. I'm about to give birth any day now so being bitten in the hip area by a dog could be disastrous for me.

I would definitely encourage you to press charges against these owners - the dog could bite again and the consequences for vunerable people could be much worse.

Sorry, but I think it’s bit of a blanket statement to say ALL dogs should be muzzled. Humans have existed with domesticated dogs for a VERY long time. I would suspect that the percentage of dog attacks in that time is an overwhelmingly minor percentage.
In all honesty, I would guess that you have had a bad experience and that is affecting your understanding of animals.

It is the owners who must be held accountable for any bad behaviour. Blanket resolutions do nothing. I look at it like this – there are people that have no regard for other people in the world – a few years back Pitbulls were banned because of attacks. This is only causing people who get a buzz for having a violent dogs to find another breed and start the whole thing over. The humans must be held accountable.

I once saw a group of really rough scumbags turn-up at Mayow park for a dog fight that they scheduled. The police were called but the guys were gone before they turned up. Later a badly mauled dog was found wandering around, left behind. This is not a normal human behaviour. Really, this is what the real worry is human, not all dogs in general. People need to be prosecuted not the animals. There has to be real consequences for the behaviour in people allowing any dog the is not under control.

I’m saying this as a dog owner but also the person who got bit the other day.

dog bite

Post by poppy »

Unfortunately, these 'scumbags' are acquiring and brutalising these Staffs at quite an alarming rate but it is also this breed that we seem to be getting more reports about attacks on people.

I posted on here about a year ago (or less) after reading a post from a woman on the East Dulwich Forum whose five/six year old daughter was mauled on a residential street in ED by a Staff. (With a similar couldn't care less attitude from the owners).

So something needs to be done, I would urge people not to sign the petition link on here. Maybe they should be muzzled for now...

I know I am scared stiff when I see one and my four-year-old is scootering around. Why should the general public have to feel like this on day to day basis?...I do find it pretty depressing that some people (usually those without children) seem so keen to put dogs before human beings, and children at that!!!

All dogs have a potential to attack and bite humans therefore all should be muzzled. Sort of no brainer really.

Yes Eagle my point exactly,
Even if it saves one child from being bitten then as far as i am concerned all dogs should be muzzled.

Its got nothing to do with having a bad experience with dogs in the past.

If humans are using these dogs as potential weapons then the sensible thing to do is to muzzle all dogs, that way any dog seen out without a muzzle should be taken away from the owner, and the owner banned from keeping dogs in the future.

If the criminal element use knives as a threat, they are taken away from them and they are prosecuted (If caught) So be it with anyone using a dog in the same manner.

Also its a well known fact there is a dog fighting group in Lewisham.

Oh, and just for the record, I will not be signing the petition that was posted here, i think it is irresponsible to do so.

I can’t believe I’m defending dogs not being muzzled on a thread I started about ME being bitten by a dog! :)

I’m really sorry but some of this sounds like it’s bordering on paranoia. Again, its a blanket solution. Regardless if I have children or not has nothing to do with my understanding if you follow the line of reason saying that ALL dogs potentially bite children, its the same reasoning that says planes and cars crash so don’t get in them. Also, I hardly think that bringing in a law of muzzling will deter people who would try to use a dog as a weapon -- they somehow don’t seem the type to follow rules.

Muzzling will not work for my dog. He hates it so much that he will sit still and refuse to move if he has to wear it at length. I only muzzle him when absolutely necessarily and for short periods. He has a short snout and I think it's uncomfortable for him.

Does this mean that I must muzzle a 13 pound pomeranian/x dog? Does this mean that if I refuse to muzzle him I should never take him for walks? I think this will make a dog less socialised therefore more of a danger to people/other animals.

Bordering on Paranoia? bit extreme don't you think?
because i voice my opinion i'm deemed paranoid?

I have been brought up with dogs of all types, and i have never been bitten.
so no i am not paranoid about them, just cautious.
members of my family take their dogs out to the park or wherever-and muzzle them, because even though they are family pets you can never say they will never bite anyone, is it worth that chance?
fair enough in your own house/garden do what you like its your choice if you wish to take the risk, but why should the public have to even think about the potential of their child getting bitten? Oh and just for fun have you ever jogged around the park with some a**e h**es dog yapping at your ankles with the stupid owner shouting out "Its ok he doesnt bite!"
Yeah Right!

COLL --QUOTE I would press charges and done whatever would have been done to ensure that the dogs would be muzzled in the future. I doubt the owners are going to run out today and invest in a couple of UN-QUOTE

So Coll, its' ok to muzzle a dog once it has bitten, but not to prevent it biting?
Odd dont you think.

All humans have the potential to strangle small kittens and children therefore all should have to wear straightjackets in public.

I really wish you'd engage your brain before posting...

Not at all. Makes complete sense to me. :D

It’s just life. People smoke with the understanding that it can cause cancer, they drink to excess regardless of the understanding of the effects. Cars and planes crash and sometimes dogs bite. Again, the percentage of dogs that have attacked is minimal compared to dogs who haven’t attacked.
My concern is that this feels that some are saying because one doesn’t believe that dogs should be muzzled, they are somehow insensitive or out of touch to the welfare of children.

Look, each person has their own point of view, mine is prevention is better than cure, yours appears to be shut the gate after the horse has bolted, thats fine it's your opinion.
but dont say someones sounds paranoid because their opinion differs from yours.
You yourself stated that you would want a dog that bit you to be muzzled to stop it biting in the future, why wait until it has maimed a child. No i'm not talking about little lap dogs, i'm talking about the big ones that owners do not seem to be able to control, some of them weigh more than the people on the other end of the lead.
each owner thinks their dog is the ideal family pet, it would be irresponsible of them to own one otherwise,But at the end of the day you cannot 100% say it will not bite a human.

Requiring all dogs to have muzzles would appear to me to be somewhat excessive, given that most dogs are well behaved and have responsible owners. What would be a better means of reducing the number of biting incidents would be for dog owners to be aware that if their dogs do go round biting people then there could well be legal consequences. Supposing there was a requirement already that dogs have a muzzle - does anyone really think that the owners in the case set out in the OP would have muzzled their dog? Hopefully they will be penalised for their actions in this occasion, and will tell their friends what happens when you fail to control your dog.

Amongst all this it is apparent that it is not scumbag dogs to blame but scumbag humans.
We can control the breeding and reproductive actions of dogs, but sadly we cannot do the same with scumbag, rubbish. moronic. anti social retards that have these dogs.
As a dog lover of many years I know that what ever the argument a dog wants an easygoing life;its the basis of the dog-human kinship over millenia past.
I too want an easy going life and the retards that own these dogs is to me the best ever argument for selective breeding of humans.
What problems this would solve eh?
What problems this would prevent.....

And before you ask who would be the arbiter of who bred and with whom, I am keen to offer my services.
I know I am suitable because God told me so.
