that would be cool.
also, are there any other team sports that are played by sydenham teams that we could go and support?
would anyone be up for that? just turning up to a hockey/football/cricket/rugby/tennis match with a couple of beers (or champers and strawberries for the tennis - that's what you poms do isn't it?) and a blanket?

Nope - it doesn't work like that over here. You support a team and you stick with them - you NEVER change. Barty is a QPR supporter - it doesn't matter that he's miles away from Loftus Road, that's his team and he can't/won't/shouldn't change. I'm Palace. I always have been, I always will be. I love them, I hate them, they frustrate the hell out of me but they're a part of me. It pi$$es me off that I chose them but what can I do? Ok, that's me and Lambchops and Nork1 up for a Palace game. Palace's season ends on 3rd May 2009 against Sheffield United (some say it ends around Christmas)
Other games to consider are Wolves on 3rd March (Tuesday 19.45 kick off)
Preston an 7th March (Sat, 15:00 KO)
Reading on 21st March, Saturday 15:00 KO. - I can't make this match
Cardiff, Sat 11th April, KO 15:00. Always a 'lively' atmosphere as the Welsh hate the English with a passion.
Derby, Sat 18th April KO 15:00
So some good high-tempo games in prospect, plenty of tickets will be available and I think they start from around £30 for adults.

I took my lad last year to Selhurst Park, even though I'm a Man U fan (I'm from Salford originally) and I wont be doing it again for some time yet. It was cold and wet (we sat in the family enclosure) and a crap nil nil draw, for which I paid about £40-00. Although I tried (honest) I couldnt muster up the slightest bit of enthusiasm for the game, and was willing it to end.
Luckily, it had no effect on my boy either, and he has not wanted to go back (ditto Stamford Bridge, where I've taken him a couple of times).
Taking him to the Palace simply had the desired effect - and he now supports Man U.

I have supported a few football teams in my time. Aldershot (in the early 1980's) Man Utd in the mid-80's (when they were still cr@p), but have only been supporting Palace (in the sense of going to matches) since 2001.
I think if i were to move out of London, I would switch to a more local team. Some of my friends also support their local team now, and unfortunately one of them is now a Reading supporter.
I do admit there are many pitfalls to supporting Palace and certain elements that can hinder the pleasure. Now speaking as an 'experienced' fan, I can suggest the better pubs to go to, the best burger/chip shops and also the better areas to sit. As an example of a pitfall, I would not suggest using any of the food outlets inside the stadium and some bar areas are better than others.
There are also parts of the ground that do not afford adequate cover if it should rain.
I would say sitting in the Holmesdale stand is the best option (do not sit in the first 10 rows of any stand as these are the seats that get wet if it rains). The lower part of this stand is more vocal and slightly cheaper seats. The upper tier is more expensive but gives a much better view of the game. Both upper and lower tiers of the Holmesdale give access to the Red and Blue bar which is adorned with historic Palace photos and has the facility so you can pre-order drinks for half tiime.
As a subsection: MRS BARTY?!?!. Did I not get a rebuke for using this term, not too long ago. Then Barty starts using the term Now the lady has only gone and registered using that very name.

i get the loyalty thing, but dont understand why someone would be reluctant to watch a game of football regardless of who's playing.

I still have a season ticket for the Lower Holmesdale stand, but i don't see it as a problem to get additional tickets within a few seats/rows.
If anyone else wants to come along I can pick up the tickets at the weekend. should be £30 a pop

Palace V Birmingham. An excellent match last night, even though it finished 0-0. A really good result for Palace, as we had a midfielder sent off in the second half.
A pleasing update to the fixture list is that the Palace v Reading match on Sat 21st March has had it's kick off put back to 17.20, which now means I can go. Whoopeee.
Reading are promotion candidates, so will be a feisty match.

come on, support your local team and business. the football club runs charity events and youth events, so it's not just about supporting the team.
there's a hockey club off perry hill or rise or whatever it's called. i wouldn't mind going and watching a game one day...i think it's the home of blackheath hockey club? it's where catford cyphers play cricket.
