Castlebar - Sydenham Hill

Post by Duffy »

Can any one help me. I need information about a house (villa) in Sydenham Road, called Caslebar.

I know it was built by John Lobb for his family.

I have searched his name on ancestry, but no luck.

So any information would be greatly appeciated.

Castlebar, 44 Sydenham Hill was built 1880-1881 for Walter Lazenby, who made a fortune manufacturing fish sauce. After his death in 1910 his widow continued living at Castlebar until her death in 1931.

The Lazenbys were the only private family to live at Castlebar. In 1932 the house was bought by the National Children's Adoption Association. After the war it became an LCC Care Home, and it is still a care home.

I can find nobody called Lobb associated with the house, and I know of no other house in the area called Castlebar. Do you have any more information?

Many thanks for the information on Castlebar

I have entered the information you gave me, and researched him on the Census records and found more information

Unfortunately I have been unable to find information on their business (fish sauce and pickle manufacturer).

There is a picture of John Lobb FRG at Castlebar, I was told that he was the man whow built the home and lived there?

If you come across any more information please let me know.

Once again many thanks.
