Totally agree, Rome is fabulous. Boyfriend and I were meant to be going to Sicily for a week but he broke his foot, so I'm deserting him for a few days in Milan with a friend instead...
Taxi to Croydon and catch an onward train from there is an option if you need to save a few £, although if it is really only £30 or so for a cab to Gatwick, then it might be worth it for the convenience - you'll pay half that to get to Croydon, then you have to add train tickets on top of that.
Or the cheapest way which takes a bit longer is the 75 bus to East Croydon on your Oyster card. The bus runs 4.30am till 1.30am and the trains from East Croydon are 24hrs. Total cost about 8 Quid.

Sorry if I'm being thick here... so the bus runs all the time except for the gap between 1.30am and 4.30am? My flight's at 7.15am so I'll need to calculate the travel time, but that might just work....
