Crystal Palace High Level Station - subway

Post by Thomas »

I understand that the subway connecting the old High Level station to the Crystal Palace is a listed building - is that right? I can see the stairs leading down to it at the top of the park (near the bus station) and I was wondering if it is possible to have a look sometime? There are locked gates surrounding the stairs but would it be possible to do a tour there?

Thomas - the Norwood Society sometimes has events in Crystal Palace Park and I have certainly visited the subway during one of these. This is their website (as a group they are particularly interested in buildings and local history):

Thomas, it's possible to get a slightly better view from the other side of the road. You can fairly easily climb over the wall and down some steps to a level area. Although it is securely protected, you can see into the tunnel.

Thanks for the tip Steve - I've just taken a look and it was very interesting - looks fairly well preserved considering it's been closed for half a century.
