Midsummer Night's Dream @ The Dolphin

Post by admin »

The theatrical event of the season is going to take place in Sydenham this month. And in the wonderfully transformed Dolphin Gardens - the ideal location for mysterious magical forests & athenean palaces.

Forgotten the plot? Here are some old 1968 clips of a very young Judi Dench & Ian "I couldn't possibly comment" Richardson doing their thing and introducing a very famous bottom:

BTW they are still looking for stage hands. If you would like to help call in at the Kirkdale Bookshop and ask for Jonathan Kaufman.

Am looking forward to the local production of this ol' "Shakey" comedy. Wished I could help in any way but wil opt to enjoying the performance. Nice to know I don't have to go far for a bit of high culture. With the blues nights at the lion and shakey performances - all we need now is some comedy - The Hob in Forest Hill offers hilarious-mediocre comedy acts on Saturday nights.

When Dolphin-owner Michael told me about the staging of the play two months ago, my first reaction was that 100 plus tickets for such an event were never going to sell. That was before he told me it was going to run for four nights!

Now, with a week to go all four nights are completely sold out. Last night at the pub, the director told me that the cast can't even find tickets for their friends and relatives.

Are we now able to say that SE26 is at the centre of a cultural explosion?

Sydenham Book Week went with a bang. We even have a local Booker Prize candidate in the last dozen books on the Man Booker Prize "longlist" - Mohammed Hanif's A Case of Exploding Mangoes. (His partner used to run Sugahill in its previous incarnation).

The Sydenham Music Festival goes from strength to strength. I understand plans are now being laid to wider the musical offering to include a "fringe" festival perhaps adding jazz and blues at venues like the Golden Lion.

Why not broaden the musical and dramatic offering further by promoting a broader range of music in different indoor and outdoor venues during the summer? Surely the newly built Forest Hill School that boasts specialisation in the performing arts can knock up a performance of something or other to add to the mix?

I agree with Biscuit. Comedy in Sydenham is sadly lacking (although we do have the Cobb's Corner roundabout!) It's just finding a suitable location. What about the back "meeting room" at the Golden Lion?

Rain Stopped PLay on the first night but the Gods were kinder on Thursday night. And because the show was a fast sell out ...

THREE EXTRA PERFORMANCES HAVE BEEN ADDED
Monday 1st, Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd September.

It now even has it own mini-website: http://www.sydenhamarts.com with some pix by Ann Pownall

One thing about this play has always puzzled me.

It's so obviously an "English" play; so why did Shakespeare set it in Athens?
