Taxi fare from East Croydon

Post by Gaz »

Can anyone tell me how much I should expect to pay for a taxi back to Syd from East Croydon (after midnight on a Sunday)?

I had a quick look on Addison Lee's website and it says about £18?! Have fuel prices really gone up that much? Is it worth ringing the cab firm by the station or just jumping in any old cab that happens to be outside E.Croydon (licensed of course...)?

Around 5 years ago i was seeking a taxi from East Croydon to Sydenham after a few shandies. It was a tad after midnight and I seem to recall the proposed fare was over £10. Therefore £18 in the current climate of high fuel prices does seem consistent, even if exhorbitant.

I walked back to Sydenham.

I've paid £18 from Ikea in Croydon so a couple of months ago. So that could be correct as that fare was during the day on a week day.

Perhaps ring a cab company and ask them as it's probably a typical journey? Here are a couple:
Forest Hill Radio Cars 020 8291 1111
Station Cars 020 8778 8888 or 020 8650 1234

If the cost is prohibitive, it is possible to travel using the night buses. My son uses them from around and about quite frequently but not sure if you'd be OK with them. The TFL Journey Planner site gives a couple of options. (I took a quick look at Sunday 29th 00.30 a.m. and 03.00 a.m.)

I got a black cab after being marooned there at about 0130 one morning. (don't ask - it was a heavy night) It cost £20. - but of course that was night-cab fare rates.

£18 sounds fair.

Got a late night cab from there in Jan/Feb sometime and paid 15 quid.

Correct - not much change from £20 these days for a cab from Croydon in anti-social hours.

Thanks for the replies - I'll make sure I have £20 put aside then!

I'm coming back from Gatwick so not sure what time I'll actually get to E Croydon to pre-book. As for the night-buses, I usu would - even with a suitcase! - but the tfl site didn't make the trip sound easy!

[Doh - just had another look at tfl, if I'm lucky I can make the last 197 back! (0042 from EC) - cheers for prompting me to relook, Mosy!]

the 75 used to be an all-nighter but they seemed to have stopped that about a year ago. Its a real pain.

just to add - it wouldn't be cheaper (if not impractical) to get the train from gatwick all the way into london and get a 176 back out?

(dfepends on how cheap you are :P)

There's a black cab rank on East Croydon station, I've used that a number of times when travelling home late from the airport and never had to wait.

Don't bother pre-booking - catch the last bus if you can, otherwise get a cab from the rank.
